Aviary plans changed yet again

Well my thought for a corner aviary has changed- I had a lightbulb moment and realised that the 27x77 recessed entertainment center spot in my living room would make for a nice big indoor aviary. This gives them a huge amount of room for the same price as the little aviary i was planning. I've obtained a lot of free lumber and construction is underway. I'm VERY tight on funds, so I'm doing it in spurts when I get some overtime money

With that being said, I need some suggestions for setup of the inside. I'm making one of the screen-door aviaries, but will only be using 2 doors for the front section (the back and both sides are backed by solid walls and will be solid). The rest will be plywood. How does everyone go about attaching perches/nests/etc on the solid plywood- drill through? Or is there a better way to attach them from the inside without drilling? not drilling would be preferable, as the three solid walls make it difficult to move things around if I change my mind about the layout. I'd have to take the whole thing apart to get to the back side of it.

Suggestions? It'll be about 64x27x90ish.

You will surely be able to get things to hold perches. Like mirror hooks. If you cannot get some you could make some out of left over wood.
Make square blocks and drill holes the diameter of your perches. One side can be just a hole and the other can be a U which you slip it into. You can also place them at different heights etc and if you want to use natural branches just find the slots that work best. Just a suggestion. I'm sure others with similar set ups will pipe up.

Anther option:
I must be the only woman in the department store looking at those free standing wooden toilet roll holders thinking "those may just make easily mounted perching.... LOL I'm not good at DIY so something premade is always easier to modify.

consider some pegboard - solid enough to keep seed & birds inside, all the holes allow for air to move, and are great hanging things onto. all those perches with the nut-and-bolt arrangement should fit perfectly in there. Actually, consider a piece for part of the aviary ceiling - it will provide a great spot to hang perches from for swinging branches. and pegboard is good for sticking greenery into, too!

I like the idea of pegboard for sure- but I thought it was made of pressed wood fibers and falls apart when wet? Just concerned at the thought of cleaning it...

I really do look forward to pictures. Doesn't have to be in its final stages, it could be beginning, intermediate, etc. Posting them along the way would be fantastic.

And yes, doing things slowly step by step, when the funds become available sounds like the way to go. No need to rush.

you can get pegboard that's been sealed or laminated on one side. unless you plan to hose down the aviary, I think it would work ok. others here on the forum have done it. or another good one is garden fencing - the kind that crisscrosses, leaving little squares. those make another good place to hang things, and wedge perches into. take a look through the aviary sticky, or try searching 'aviary' for some cool ideas.

If you want to consider drilling after all: I have several flag pole holders in my aviary, mounted to the walls. The kind that people use for holding flags outside the front door. They are great for holding natural branches. Several branches tied together with ductape work great.

ALSO, cutting a small sectiong of mesh (maybe around one inch) and stapling it onto the solid wood let's you hang nests and and perches from the mesh.

That is so cool! i hope you do well with your aviary! i am planning my own STILL but i never thought about a corner aviary..seems great! i think i am going to change my plans now haa

I thought about peg board, but when it gets wet I was told that and particle board get nasty.

I used hardware mesh, they also have mesh made out of fishline that some use but you probably cannot hang stuff from that.

A cheap thing you may be able to get for walls is coroplast from a sign supply place. Its used to make cheap outdoor signs.

Flag pole holders!! GENIUS! I actually have 6 of them handy- I do dog agility and have a set of training weave poles with the adjustable flagpole bases. That would give me the ability to put it in a general location and adjust it to where I want it. GREAT idea!

I also think I'm going to go with more of a 'hanging' theme. Perches etc will hang from the top, with a few exceptions. I've got a big willow tree in my front yard that I will likely pull branches from to make an interesting set of perches for them- privacy and flexible perches to challenge them. I'll probably put a set of angle-braces in the corner that I can weave fresh branches through on a regular basis. Instead of washing it, just cut a new limb and replace it!

I'll get pictures of the space tomorrow. It's currently occupied by a large pile of donated lumber I'm off work tomorrow so I think I will start on making the framework... wish me luck!!
