Protecting Water and Food from Droppings

These are pictures from my parakeet cage, but the idea could be used anywhere.

Took add-on perches, cut a take-out container lid in half to fit, and tied it on with a little bit of wire. (you can't see that, but it's down low near the upright hanger part. Poked a hole with a big needle to thread the wire through.)





To protect the food bowls, we bent & fitted stiff wire through more take-out lids (free and ample supply at home, here) so that it could be hung on the side of the cage over the food bowls. This way we don't have to worry about having perches, swings, or toys above food bowls, which frees up so much more space in the cage.

My problem is that my zebras will perch right on the food dish/tray, turn around and poop into the food.

Yeah, we get that, too. Finding some size/depth dishes work better than others, for that. Seems like maybe the shallower, the better, if it's easy for them to reach down to get food, they are less likely to hop inside, or turn and perch on a raised edge. Long and skinny works better than wide and round, less room to settle in the middle. Still working on finding the best, tho.

These covers do solve the problem of not being able to place something because there is a perch, swing, or favorite flight path overhead. Easy enough to clean, since poop doesn't stick well to plastic.

very nice! good idea

Most of my cages are vision cages and come with the covers to go above the food and water dishes....but I may use this idea on my non vision cages
