My pair of owl finches have started sleeping in their dried egg mix dish, the cage is a 30 inch long one, perches either side, wood breeding box, they are almost 6 months old, any ideas why they may be doing this?
These are my first owls, they are alone but clise to my bigger cage with gouldians, cordon blue and canary, they are active and meow and the male sings softly mostly in the evenings.
Thanks:)

Re: Owl finches sleeping in dish
do they usually sleep in the box? Since these are 6 months old and a pair with a nestbox...keep an eye on them, owls are better bred at 1 yr (recommended). They may view the dish as a nesting spot.

No they haven't used the box, there's nesting material on the floor but they have shown no interest, someone told me they breed at 8 months and to give them nesting options now to get them in the mood?cindy wrote: do they usually sleep in the box? They normally sleep on the perch, this is the first night I've noticed them doing this.

My Owls always slept in a nest at night, and if I took away their nest, they would tuck into one of the plastic plants in the cage, usually hidden away so well I couldn't even see them any longer. That is odd that yours do not use the nestbox at all.

It is recommended to breed owls at 1 yr of age, it is better for the hen. When it is time try a wicker tub nest or an ABBA nest box...none of mine like wooden boxes.

I took that dish out and they are sleeping on the perch now, I'll take the box out until they are older:)
