Post by Laura » Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:09 pm

What is the maximum bar spacing that is acceptable for finches?
Thank you!

Half inch max....And even then I've had birds with their heads stuck between bars in the past.Wider than this is asking for trouble.

If you have any waxbills (goldbreast especially) you will want much less.
They are very small and can escape easily.

I was wondering this too, since I also saw a great steal on craigslist. I realized it was parakeet/cockatiel-sized. Are the bars for those too far apart? They look okay to me, but I don't want to spent money on a cage I wont use (even if it is crazy cheap).

Did it list the measurments? It shouldn't be over a half inch wide.

You wanna see quail chicks...just like bumble bees...they can walk through bars as if they weren't there.

I always email the person on craigslist, explain that I have finches that can easily escape anything more than 1/2", then ask them to actually measure the bar spacing, since with the price of gas, I can't afford to make an unnecessary trip. That has saved me a few trips. I have seen cages on craigslist that are listed for finches, but are way too small, or large cages that have bar spacing that is too wide for my little birds. I also ask how long, deep, tall.
