Building An Indoor Aviary - Have Questions

Post by SFincher » Thu Mar 07, 2013 8:03 am

I'm making an aviary out of closet in my house. The closet space is roughly 3ft x 2ft x 9ft. How many perches should I put in there and where should I put the highest one? I know they need room to fly so I don't want to put them too close together or too high up. Does anyone have any thoughts, opinions, or advice? Anything will be welcome.

I would probably put the bulk of the perches etc on each end so the middle is less cluttered and easy to fly through. I think it's impossible to put a perch too high so the highest you are able to put it will be fine. There is also no reason not to put a few very low especially if you will have feeding or water dishes on the bottom or near the bottom.
good luck, would love to see pictures as you go

Thank you Debbie. So you're saying if I put two perches in, one down low and one up high, that should be fine? I have the food dishes up high, about 6ft. Eye level with me. I'm hoping to get a screendoor made within the next few days. Then it's just a matter of adding a nest and the perches and I'll have the basics and can move the finches in there.

Would the two perches and a small potted fake tree be too much? I thought it'd be nice to have a little tree in there for them to perch on also, probably about 4ft high, in the dead center of the closet/aviary, on the floor.

I'll definitely try to take pictures. My digital camera is on the fritz and my cam isn't close enough to the closet to use. I'll try to think of something. Thanks again for your advice Debbie. Greatly appreciated.

That indoor aviary in the gallery uploaded by flygirl is roughly the size of my closet, only my closet is alot taller and walled on three sides. To give you an idea of the size.

I put branches in my aviary on each side so there were multiple angles and size perches for them, some up high some down low. If they will be able to fly over top of the tree that would be fine, mine always loved fake trees, just try not to limit their fly area.

Personally, I would put perches up high at either end, so they can fly back and forth between them, and also so there are multiple options to avoid squabbles over who gets the highest spot. If your tree is tall, you could put that at one end instead of a perch. If it's short, you could use it in the middle.
I'm sure your birds will love having all that space!

Thank you Debbie & Marble. I really enjoy this feedback. I'll certainly take your advice to heart and use it. And I'll certainly not limit the fly space. They have wings and should be at liberty and freedom to use them. I'll put two perches up high on either side and two down low. I don't have a fake tree per say, but I wanted to get opinions about using one. I like the branch idea, to give them different angles to perch or fly from. Thanks so much!
