I think it's a great idea. As far as cats and dogs go, I would try to shut them out of the room when you have birds in it. I think their claws could easy cut right through that mesh if they got curious (or hungry).
It might be worth purchasing the poles for the corners that they sell separately. You might be able to rig them somehow to hold perches.
