Your ideal cage front ?

Post by Smurf » Mon Aug 26, 2013 7:25 pm

I'm using box style cages 38" x 20"x 20" with cage fronts and will be constructing more over winter for next year, the cage fronts i have are std 36" x 15" with 2 x feed pots, 1 x nest box door and the normal main door, my flight cages use either 2 of these or 3 x 24" in same fronts. This means i have to use main door for bird bath, 1 x feed pot for seed, 1 x feed pot for egg food and put hand in cage to place additional veg pot which startles birds. ( water fountain is on outside and crushed oyster shell, charcoal + cuttlefish bone don't need to be changed much so not a problem )

I don't like placing my hand in cage or using main door for bird bath as i'm afraid it would be a bit too disruptive if birds are nesting.

I have a roughly 10 foot length of wall for cages which is why i'm using 36" single + 72" double cages.

What are your thoughts on ideal cage front ?

i.e. should they have 4 x feed pots, 2 x nest doors (1 for bath + 1 for nest box) + main door on each front, or use 2 x 18" fronts or ????

I wish we had the selection of cage fronts that are available to you in Europe. In the U.S., box-style cages are in the minority. Mostly, we see open wire or mesh cages, then we drape fabric over parts of the cage or tie fake plants to the outside to provide privacy. I would love it if a vendor would offer box-style cages. Actually, there are a few, but they are so expensive that they are out of my price range. Sorry I can't answer your questions, with no experience with cage fronts. I hope some of our European members will have some answers for you.

I second Sally's comments - our best option is to buy inexpensive cages and take them apart for the fronts, which is quite a waste.
I wonder why there aren't more available in the US? It seems that someone would have filled that niche by now.

Thank you Cindy, that's the design i was thinking would be most suitable, i've never seen them advertised with the 4 x feed flaps and 3 x doors before. The second link you posted looks like a very expensive option as i'm on a tight budget.
I was thinking about getting some made for the next level of cages i build and wanted to be sure of the design i wanted before enquiring about availability/cost so if anyone has any thoughts/suggestions about what design cage front would be best please give your views
