Hello guys this is my second post not to sure about what I should do so figured I would ask for some help before I did thee wrong thing. I used to have A chinese water dragon that I kept in A very large enclosure - Indoor aviary size I would say its roughly 6 and a half foot tall by 6ft wide and about 3 and a half foot off the wall.... and unfortunately had to get rid off my dragon recently. So yesterday I spent the day turning it into an enclosure for my society finches. Totally cleaned the whole thing out and decorated it and added a couple toys and vines and stuff for the birds. when I originally built the enclosure I had been lazy and just left the inside walls plane wood because water dragons spend most of there lives in trees anyway so I figured she would like the pattern of the wood. now that I have my birds in this space instead I would really like to do something to the walls to make it more appealing to the eye. recently while I was doing some work with one of my jobs as a mural artist I discovered this paint made by Krylon. also Rustoleum has A similar product. But the the product I am talking about is the make it stone paint by Krylon if your not familiar with it it creates A rough texture on any wall or surface like stone so you can make some cool stuff like cave walls and that kind of stuff. And as an artist I would love to do something really insane inside my avairy !
So my question is because I cant find anything online regarding the toxicity of this paint I want to know if it would be safe to use this stuff in the first place if anyone has had any experience with it. And also another idea I had was if this paint itself is toxic and not safe to use on its own is it possible to clear coat it with some kind of sealant or whatever that is safe for the birds ?? and if so does anyone know what brand of sealant or clear coat I should use that is safe for birds that will work over this type of paint ? as I cant find any kinds of sealant online either. Keep in mind I live in canada and I know from my experience working in different countries doing art murals on walls that different countries have different brands of sealants and paints and stuff then others so let me know of brands available in canada !!
But yeah thanks alot if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated !!! if I cant figure out A safe way to do it i will just leave that back wall wood !

Re: Aviary Stone ''R''
I used that paint when we made fake rocks for my leopard gecko tank, it's looks great. Didn't have any problem with them using it, though they are not birds. You might be able to email or contact the manufacturer and ask them if it would be toxic.
I think it would be ok and would try it myself, but not 100% confident enough to say yes to someone else.
Personally I think a sealant would ruin the whole look.
good luck, let us know how you make out

I hadn't heard of that paint - sounds interesting! I'm with Debbie - I'd probably try it myself, but would recommend that others check with the manufacturer.

The stone paint http://www.krylon.com/products/make-it- ... red-paint/ if anything like some of the hammered metal effects may contain flakes of something to give it the textured look. It being textured might be difficult to wipe down since finches have a tendency to poop out the side and back of the cage. I would be more concerned with what is in the product to give it the textured look, could it be picked off and ingested.
I would opt for a smooth easy to wash finish. I did a smooth Italian terracotta tile, all hand painted to look like actual tile on a back splash in a kitchen, sealed it with a roll on finish or you can do the art work and cover it with a piece of clear plexi-glass for easy cleaning that way you can use the textured paint without them actually coming in contact with it.

Ok guys wanted to let you know hat I did check with Krylon and they got back to me really quickly.. Great company ! .... They had told me that they checked with numerous veterinarians during the process of making this product and had been told by them that it is not recommended that you use there products for the inside of bird cages at all because they have no idea how long it takes for the chemicals to "de-gas" I believe was the term they used, and birds are extremely sensitive to these types of fumes and what not. (made me think of when they would use canaries in coal mines and when the bird died they knew to leave... or something like that I think)... So anyway thats whats up... maybe I will do something kool with the outside of my new Aviary. be careful if you choose to use this stuff around your animals birds especially from what i got from the email !!! still an amazing product none the less
