Housing/lighting source

Post by frenchstyle712 » Fri Jan 10, 2014 4:55 pm

Hi! I have a question about the full spectrum lighting requirement . Are GE reveal bulbs considered full spectrum for purposes of providing finches with the lighting they need to thrive? I am not breeding my finches, so that isn't a consideration. I am wondering because the labeling on the GE reveal bulbs indicates color enhanced "full spectrum."
It would be great if I could use what I have and not have to buy additional bulbs. However, if the consensus is GE reveal isn't sufficient, then please suggest additional options I can find at the local hardware store. I see there are specialty bulbs for reptiles available online, but am not sure I need to spend the money on those for my finches.
Thanks for reading.
I appreciate any feedback.
Andrea

I did a quick search for GE Reveal bulbs, and it seems they have a temperature of 2850K. For our birds, a temperature of between 5000K and 5500K is what you want. Also, look for bulbs that have a CRI of at least 92, and much better would be 95-98.

You may not find what you need at your local hardware store, a lot depends on the fixture you are using as to what is available in bulbs. Be careful with the reptile bulbs, some of them have a temperature of 6500K. I was using them, and I did find that I now have problems with feather plucking and just ratty feather condition in general. The only thing I changed was to add the reptile bulb.
