Societies with Javas

Post by Barb » Sun Jun 01, 2014 4:27 pm

I have two male Societies and wondering if I can have two male Java finches with them?

My cage is 30L x 18D x 36H.

Thank you

That's a wonderful question! I'll be interested to hear what the others have to say on this.

In my experience, Javas generally play well with others.

Zebras? Not so much.

But, Javas have a definite size advantage over zebras, so perhaps that's enough to keep them from being bullies.

I would be cautious and monitor closely when putting four males of any species together.

It's tough though, as each bird is an individual, so it's hard to speak in generalities as there are exceptions to every rule. Easier to talk about specific individuals.
For instance, I have one male zebra who is a huge bully and fits the bullyish zebra mold, while I have two other male who are very docile and get along with everyone, so.
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

I do not recommend societies with java...java males can be pushy and can dominate over calm passive societies.

It really depends on the individuals, but to be honest I doubt it would work well in a cage that size.
I keep 4 javas, 4 desert finches and 3 societies all together in a large (36" x 60") flight with no problems, but I think a 30" x 18" cage is really just big enough for the two javas or a few societies.
My javas don't ever cause problems with the other species, even though they bicker amongst themselves. In a larger cage I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

Java will get territorial in tight spots....a cage that size since most birds stay to the top....I do not look at vertical flight room at space it is more the horizontal room, side to side that I would consider....I have seen java actually hold onto and dangle another java by the wing because the bird wanted to save it's perch spot as it's own and the victim got to close...that was in a 5 ft long, 3 high flight
