PETCO Designer White Finch Flight Cage

Post by Lacybug » Wed Jul 30, 2014 8:43 pm

So I bought one of these the other day, and my two zebbies are absolutely loving the new space!

But it comes with no advice for what to do with the door on the side. Obviously it's for a nest box, but what kind? I bought one of these, but it was too wide to fit with the perch (I want it to be on the outside), and I wouldn't know how to attach it if it did anyway.

Does anybody have one and could help me out here? Thanks! :)

It is for a plastic nest box, like the ones they sell at ladygouldian.com. Not the ABBA nest box, unfortunately. It has a small circle in the front and a small perch that sticks out below the circle/hole entrance. Then, there are small hooks that hook onto the cage, after you open the door and it closes onto the nestbox without any gaps.

Here's a picture of the nestbox I use with my Petco finch cage.

Ooo, cool. I'd wondered the same thing but hadn't gotten around to worrying about it. Is that a hatch at the top so you can see into the nest? Can you access the nest easily for cleaning etc?

Thanks! That makes much more sense haha.
I see the one you're talking about on this page, but would the "Plastic Finch Nestbox" also work? I'm not quite sure what you mean by ABBA, sorry.

Also, the door on my cage is one with a spring that opens/closes right to left, does that matter?

That other plastic finch box at ladygouldian.com is the Abba nest box. I would think it would work as well as the plastic nest box. Both of them hang on the outside with hooks. On some cages, you have to secure the breeding doors open with twist-ties. Both of those nest boxes allow you to open the top to check--the plastic nest box has slots in the top for ventilation (and for peeking)!

Angela&Shalamar, I use those plastic nest boxes shown in the picture above. Yes, that is a little door that opens so you can see into the nest. It has plastic bars across the hatch, so the birds can't get out. You can open the entire top open to clean it out too.

I have that cage, it works great! The only thing is that you should get new perches instead of the once they provide you because they really aren't good perches. Good luck. My finches live it in that cage. :D

The ABBA nest box does not work on that Petco cage, it's too wide and leave a gap the birds can get out from. The doors do have springs, which helps hold the box in place, but be careful not to bump the box or it can fly off. I'm a little clumsy, so maybe it won't be a problem for you. LOL.

I agree to change the perches and add some plastic greenery, like ivy vines or something to make the cage more natural and comfortable. I use a variety of perches, some thinner and some that look like branches from trees, but I don't use the wooden dowels because they finches needs the varied shapes to keep their legs nimble and strong. Also, the dowels can harber bacteria. The perches I buy can be cleaned and disinfected.

You can easily screw cup hooks into the wooden nest box & it will work. Hold it in front of the door and mark the spots on the nest box where the hooks will go.

This was the first cage I bought when I exited to keep gouldians. I was excited by the price but now that I'm at 6 breeding pairs of them, I only use it as a quarantine/hospital cage. I have several of them since they can be bought fairly cheaply used. Unfortunately, I have a pair of gouldians that insisted on breeding in one of them. My other gouldian pairs are in 36x18x18 stacking breeder cages and trust me, those extra 6 inches make a big difference. It just took a while to clean, sterilize and air dry.

I bought the stacking breeders used so they were actually much cheaper than the petco flight cage. I think it came out to about 15 each stacking cage as opposed to 50 new for the petco flight cage.

Overall, they are decent. I just prefer to be able to remove the bottom grate for cleaning. The original intention was to get 4 of the petco flight cages and put them all on a bakers rack with fluorescent lights but in the end, buying the stacking breeders with rolling stand would have been cheaper even if I bought them new.

The flight cage should work for zebras pretty well.
To each his own.

I use the "Plastic Finch Nestbox" on those cages, and it is slightly smaller than the opening (even with the bottom plate). I just taped a piece of sturdy cardboard along the bottom to fill the gap.

The plastic finch nestbox is the ABBA nest box. It is too small for the Petco breeder door opening. I did not want to tape the side to keep finches from escaping, so I got the other one as pictured in my post above.
