A tunnel between cages? See photo.

I have these big flight cages, with Gouldians in them. I was wondering if anyone ever created a temporary "tunnel" between 2 of these by opening the upper doors (where the nest boxes go) so birds could go from one cage to the other? (not ideal - a double flight would be better but I don't want to permanently modify 2 single cages into a double - maybe I just need to buy a double?).

I've seen a pic of somebody doing that before. I think they had it connected by some sort of duct.

I did that once with 2 cages and parakeets. I used those plastic colored tunnels that come with hamster cages. It was absolutely the cutest thing in the world to see them scoot through the tunnels into the next cage.
I would try that with the goulds; maybe they would do the same

Never thought of hamster tunnels - that might work !!

I am also re-thinking whether I just want to buy a double cage. I can't see any downside to a double cage, since I have the room.

Go for the double flight. I have three and love them, so do my finches!

If you have the space... build an indoor aviary! You'll never look back.

BUT I can also see no harm in a double flight. If you can, an extra cage is always handy.

I think the tunnel would be a neat idea once they learn how to use it!

If you used a different type of stand or table, you actually could just unscrew the sides and remove those side panels that would go next to each other and zip tie the cages altogether and sit the whole thing on the new stand. You could have a triple wide!

I went ahead and ordered a double-flight cage! I found a pretty good deal on eBay with free shipping. When I get it, I'll only put perches only at either end so my Gouldians have to fly. It will be good for them! It will be a pain to put together but will be worth it in the end.

The advantages I see in having a double flight:

1) Birds get more exercise!
2) I can use the divider to "shrink" the cage to 2 single cages for: breeding (1 pair on each side), cleaning (clean one side at a time), and catching birds (at least no worse than current situation!).

And I'll keep at least one of my extra single flight cages so I will have one that I can rotate out for cleaning. A win-win !!!
