introducing new gouldians

Post by kyle » Fri Jan 02, 2015 12:34 am

In a few days a new pair of gouldians will be joining my existing pair in a flight cage 37''×27"×4'. The pair I have are 10 months old, and have been in the new flight cage for 2 weeks. The new ones are about 2 years old. What would be the best way to introduce them?

Hi Kyle.

If I were you, I would initially keep the new birds in a separate cage, just to make sure that there are no health issues. If all goes well and everyone is fine, I would let them see each other, and listen to each other for a little while and then introduce them.

You could change things around a little bit in your flight ( perches, food dishes, greenery etc.) although I haven't found Gouldians to be as territorial as some species.

Congratulations on new birdies, and good luck.

Hi Elana thank you, I'm quite excited about the new finches. I have an african grey snd have had budgies years ago, but never had finches untill recently. I dont know how their charm escaped me,! Sounds like good advice. I will just have to be patient.
