Type of heat lamp

Post by carcoozie » Sat Jan 03, 2015 7:01 pm

I am getting my cage ready for a pair of finches and I went to PetSmart and got a heat lamp. It is made by "All Living Things" and the bulb is a 50 watt infrared spot bulb (no light, just heat). Does anyone know if this type is safe/un-safe. I just read about the possibility of Teflon in the light.
Thanks!

I just use a regular 60-watt bulb in a light enclosure on the top of their cage. That way they can sit near the light if they want heat and escape the heat if they want.

Zebra Finches are pretty hardy and can withstand temps down to 55F.

The enclosure I use (see photo) has a place for 2 lights. The other light bulb is a Full Spectrum bulb, which is more important for them than heat since it provides much needed vitamins.

You can get the enclosure from Petsmart for about $30 and a Full Spectrum Bulb from Amazon for $20

I am getting Gouldians (from Toddmin) and it gets a bit cool in that corner at night. Although not anywhere near 55 degrees. Is a heat lamp unnecessary?

I was thinking of getting a few Gouldians also and after talking to a friend that has them I was told they like it at minimum 70f-80f so yes, I would get a heat lamp.

I'd try getting two. One for day time that puts off light and heat plus separate night time bulb that puts out just heat.

For heat lamps, I love the ceramic heat emitters. They are pricey, but I think they will last a long time, since they are only used during winter. My house is warm enough that I only need heat lamps when a bird is sick, so these bulbs will probably last me my lifetime!

I keep my finches in my unheated daylight basement. It only gets down to 59 degrees, due to heat from upstairs and most likely a few leaky heating ducts, and the birds do fine. If I have a sick bird, I bring it upstairs and use a heating lamp.
