Painting a bird room

Post by atarasi » Wed Mar 25, 2015 8:04 pm

I moved into a different house in a farming community and I'm on well water and septic. Along with the well water, there is a separate building where the well pump is. At some point, they added a separate room under the same roof as the well pump. I've spent a lot of time preparing this room for the birds and re-insulated the ceiling and walls, tore down the wood paneling and ugly acoustic ceiling tiles and replaced with new sheetrock. I've also replaced the two windows with new vinyl clad more efficient windows.

When I paint the walls and ceiling, I've learned I need to use a low VOC paint. Anyone have experience with Benjamin Moore's EcoSpec paint, Harmony Interior Latex, Green Planet Paint or any of the organic, clay, sunflower oil, food grade ingredient paints?

I don't have an answer to this. But I'm curious to hear what the others say as I need to paint my bird room too. I did primer. Now we need color!

I've been reading a lot on the internet regarding VOC levels and it's scary to think that even after regular latex paint has dried, it still leaches these volatile organic compounds in the air for months if not years. If you cover regular primer with low to no VOC paint, does it seal the primer from VOC or can it still emit through? I'm not sure.

I'll talk to a few paint stores and find out what brands are available to me in this area and let you know.

Home Depot has no VOC paint, but has horrible reviews.
Sherman Williams has a no VOC EcoSelect with bad reviews too.
They do have a more expensive Pro-Mar 200 Zero VOC with good reviews. With a 30% off coupon online, it might be worth getting.

I used the Home Depot paint in my bedroom & 2 bathrooms and loved it :) I still would not paint my bird room without removing my birds. Paint fumes, even in low or no VOC paints are dangerous for such tiny lungs.

Thanks for the links, Jordan, those tips should help quite a bit when members are wanting to paint bird rooms or cages.

Thanks Sally. I'll post a few pics of the room when it's painted after I decide on the color! :?
