Re: Crazy BirdHouse - FINISHED
Cindy,
The one open aviary has 4 pair of red head gouldians. I sweep and damp mop, I usually use a diluted bleach water. I mop a small section then dry with a towel. There are only a couple of areas that get heavy poop. Those are under the roosting perches. The other aviaries have either carefresh bedding or white butcher paper. Those have 1 pair of breeding finches. The aviaries take a long time to get fouled with just a pair of birds in it. Once the chicks fledge and are independent I place them in grow out cages. As they get older I seperate them to 1 bird per cage. Makes it easier to identify sex and watch conformation. Also caged individually they are non stressed. They are kept in species rooms so they have plenty of interaction with their own kind but no accicental breedings or pluckings set up 1 to a cage. You must understand that I have a set up geared to breeding, study, and record keeping.
The tall 60' flight cages I bought from a distributor when I had the grooming shop. They are about 10 years old. Many of my cages have been around for a long time. I don't know if they even make the 60" ones any more.
At the time I have set up:
H L W
18 - 36" x 30" x 18" (3 of these are not occupied)
17 - 18" x 30" x 18" (4 of these are not occupied)
3 - 60" x 30" x 18"
2 - 48" x 20" x 32"
30 - 16" x 24" x 16" (12 of these are not occupied)
Cage bank (at the moment set up as 8 breeders) 12" x 30" x 12" compartments
2 - 6 foot floor to ceiling aviaries (1 is not occupied at the moment)
2 - outdoor aviaries
1 - indoor aviary

Candace, that is amazing. Your rooms are very organized and well thought out.
Bird and Cage has the tall flights the highest is 70 inches from the ground
http://www.birdandcage.com/images/2570.jpg
the next smallest is 55 inches
http://www.birdandcage.com/images/2570.jpg
I was just very pleased with the cages that I just got from Country Feather. I thought I would ask. The tall cages like what you have would be perfect for young. I could wheel it out onto the pool deck on warm sunny days. (Alternative to builing a structure)

Re: Crazy BirdHouse - FINISHED
The only problem with using them as grow out cages is that they are still only 30" wide. Once I took one and put it on it's side, wired all the doors shut except 2... hung seed cups on the side and used it as a grow out for some zebra chicks. It was inside an outside aviary over a concrete floor so the poop was allowed to fall to the ground. I put the catch trays on top so the parent zebs could not poop through the top bars. This made for 5 foot of horizontal flying space. Also was handy to band the zebra chicks in the nest, then gather them when they fledged and plave them in this flight to color out. Was able to track family lines and seperate the sexes before breeding/inbreeding problems could arize. Some youngters will breed at a very young age and though usually a nest is not provided the hen will still try to lay eggs and sometimes suffer grave consequenses to her health. So I always seperate the males and females as soon as they color out.

I have found for birds that like to roost high that they make great breeding cages. With my parrot finches they can be at the top and on the stands they are 7 foot high so when I walk into the room they still feel secure.

Re: Crazy BirdHouse - FINISHED
The Crazy Bird House remains to this day, a inspiration. Simply epic. I hope to do this one day as well, when I retire, whenever that may be.

For those who were not here in 2009 and want to follow this chronicle, the next one can be found here: http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9852
Truly inspirational.

dutch As with some other members, CandoAviary is no longer active on this forum. Sometimes, when old topics are revived, they were originally started by members who are no longer around, and so there are no answers.

I so enjoyed all her posts when she was active on the forum.
I checked her two facebook pages; the one "Cage Bird Menagerie" has a red printed note on it "closed now". Does anyone know if her shop and business is still open

I know Candace is still active on Facebook. We chat occasionally. I'm not sure about the shop though. As I'm not in Florida I don't look at the business page that often...
I too enjoyed all her posts.
