Post by Arama » Sat Aug 15, 2015 3:13 pm

My attempt at cat proofing seems to be working. Its been a week and they have not even tried to jump up on the shelf.

LOL!
How high is this shelf? It looks like it's right under the ceiling :-)
No wonder the cats aren't getting up there.

If the cats can reach it, they will. Maybe not right away, but eventually. Cats never give up, and can't be trusted around birds.

lovezebs you are correct its about two inches from the ceiling. I've adjusted it so there is no space in front or the one side for them to attempt. On the other side is some stuff to make them think there is no room. The first few days the cats just sat and stared at it for hours. Now they've just given up and ignore them for the most part.

My smaller cage is also on a shelf in my dining area an its roughly 6.5 feet off the ground. The larger is just under 5 feet off the ground. I now have to use a chair to stand on to change food and what not. When I need more access for cleaning the cats get a time out in my bedroom until done. I had to do something after they knocked the small cage off of a dresser in a closed off room. Either way it seems to be working for now. I will eventually come up with a better solution.

Hi Trish,
When they stare at the cages, I would make use of a spray bottle with cold water.
It's amazing how a cold spritz of water under the tail can dissuade a kitty.

Mine used to see the bottle and go running off with a , meeyaa-rah-wrrah- meeyaruck! Which I took for a cat's way of swearing at me :-).

When I had Lovebirds, the cats were terrified of them. However, Finches were a different story. I did end up losing a Gouldian juvenile (who was swiped through the space between the floor and the bathroom door). A Shaft Tail girl, who was half way pulled through the bars of a flight, and died of her injuries. And almost lost a young Zebra girl, who was injured the same way, but managed to get away, and miraculously survived.

I lost both of my kitties early this Spring. I love Cats, however at this point decided not to open my home to any more kitties right now.
