Hi Chris.

So it does get fairly cool in the Winters. I didn't know SA, had temperatures in those ranges. Do you get snow as well ?

It's amazing that your birds manage to survive and thrive without some sort of heating, with temperatures dropping down that much. You must raise some tough birdlings, my friend :-).

Good luck with the upcoming breeding season.

lovezebs Elana, South Africa is a very large country with very different climates in the various regions. You have the tropical and sub-tropical areas, where there is hardly any winters. You also have the semi-desert and inland areas, where the day temp in winter can be 25 - 30 Celsius, overnight the temp might drop to -12 Celsius. It is a very dry cold, with very little moisture in the air as the rain only comes in summer.
In the Western Cape, where I live, different to the rest of the country, we have winter rainfall. We only get snow on the mountains for short periods and it doesn't get very cold. But it is a wet cold, and that kills birds more than just low temperatures.

That's quite fascinating, that there is such a variety of different weather conditions.

In Canada, we have the far North, with very cold Winters, and short hot Summers. The West coast has fairly decent weather, but lots of rain (although not this year). The Rocky Mountains, get lots of snow, cold Winters, and warm to hot Summers. The foothills/prairies (where I am), we get cold Winters with snow, and hot Summers, and it's very dry all year around. We also get Chinook winds in the Winter, which can raise the temperatures amazingly fast. The prairies, get long very cold Winters, with varrying degrees of snow, and hot, mosquito infested Summers. As you work your way Eastward, into the Eastern Provinces, you get long Winters, with lots of snow and hot Summers, with lots of humidity. Going further East, you hit the Maritime Provinces, which have very snowy Winters and wet Summers, with very high humidity and cold winds off the Atlantic.

So that's pretty well it for Canada.

Here in Calgary, we have weather which can be very changeable very quickly. We have a saying here, that if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes, and it's very true. In the Winter, I've seen temperatures rise by 20 degrees or more in a few hours, when a Chinook blows in. This Summer, has been hot and very dry. Just a couple of days ago, we broke a record (from 1906) when the thermometer shot up to 34-35 degrees, and today, it's barely 10 degrees and pouring down rain.... So go figure, shrug...... :-?? :-?? :-??

cjkrit Awesome aviary set up. I'm sure the improved roof slope will save you hours of worry over drips and leaks. I need to do the same with my planted area. It has a roof but not too sloped so in heavy rain the roof provides only a bit of protection from wind and the worst rain. Luckily my shelter area is snug and dry.

We all drool when we see your aviary. Lovely lovely setup.

@Rox  Personally, I'd try have my cake and eat it.... what's wrong with looking for that very generously wealthy guy that just happens to be great looking too!!!!!!!!!

I think I have to agree with Monotwine & Elana and go for both rich and good looking. I definitely don't want someone who looks like a shoebill bird

Be very careful with spouses. Mine has only been feeding my birds for a month and she already thinks they are her birds. I listen to her talk to the birds when she goes and feed them. She call them "Mummy's little babies".

lovezebs I think ok. We will see when I have another x-ray in another few weeks. I was supposed to get another cast, but I told the doctor that I will wear a moonboot and he agreed to it. When I go out, I put on a moonboot, but when I am on my bed, or watching tv, I take it off. I can't see what harm it will do seeing as all the broken bones are bolted together. The bottom line is I can't put any weight on my foot for the next 3 weeks.

Well, a moon boot is better than a cast. At least it can come off and give you a ...... I was going to say give you a break , but I guess give you a rest, sounds better :-).

So, in three weeks, hopefully things will be looking (and feeling) better.

What happens now, if you have to go through a metal detector in the airport, with all that hardware in your ankle ?

How are the birds holding out?
