Lucille

How did you manage with the cage construction?

Getting new cages/flights, is always exciting. I love putting them together and decorating them for the kids. I also love watching the birdlings exploring a new flight, checking out the plants, flowers, swings, etc. Reminds me of families in an open house, lol.

In the last few years, I've only bought one 'new' cage flight. The rest have been hand me downs, or second hand . All of my large flights, were bought second hand, for a fraction of their original price. A number of my smaller flights were constructed out of pieces from other cages, put together and attached with wire and plastic ties, to make them bigger.

Hope both you and your birdies enjoy the new cages.

OMG that white Prevue cage is 'spensive!

Occasionally the black version of that same cage goes on sale for $109, normal price being under $175.

The 30x18x18 Prevue cage is available on Amazon for $50 and probably goes on sale once in awhile if you watch it.

My preference is the F070/F075 (same cage, one comes premounted on a stand).

The PetCo cage is gone off the website, but they still have it at my local Petco and have in fact restocked it since I first went looking for it. You'll need to call or go over there, the website is useless for this particular item for some reason. Maybe they don't like to ship it. Which is dumb on their part because I bought a different more expensive and less appropriate cage at their competitor's store because I couldn't find anything better via the website. Had that cage been on the website, I'd have bought their cage instead. But since it wasn't, I bought a more expensive cage from the competition.

Here are links to my favorite finch cages - if I bought the tall versions, I would rig up a debris tray to put in the middle so I'd have 2 flights. My finches spend 90% of their time in the top of the cage. A tall cage doesn't seem that much use to them.

Prevue 37x18x21 with stand

Prevue 37x18x21 WITHOUT stand

Prevue 37x23x60 (x-large) or 31x20x53 (large) double-height flight cage, the X-large one goes on sale for $109 once in awhile. The black version of the X-large cage is $60 less than the white version someone else posted a link to. I mean the regular price; when it is on sale, as it has been a couple of times recently, it is about $125 cheaper.

The F070/F075 is an EXTREMELY sturdy and well-built cage, you can get extra debris trays so you can just pull out the dirty ones and stick in clean ones. I don't use the wire trays in the bottom so being able to hot-swap, as it were, the debris trays means it is much easier and less stressful for all concerned to clean the cages. You have to get those from the manufacturer though.

I have a different Prevue cage which is 25x21x29 because that was the longest cage I could find at PetSmart, but I will be replacing it with the F070/F075 after I move. It's just a way better, more appropriately sized cage.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Elana,
The one Petco cage was put together in 5 minutes. The giant wire shelf took some doing because of its weight, but it finally got put together. It seems very sturdy and two of the casters have brakes, which will help because I do not believe there is an easy way to attach the shelf to a wall.
The 5 Prevue 30 18 18 should be delivered tomorrow so I will put them together then.
The Petco cage is very nice quality, I'm hoping the Prevue's will be identical..

I have a petco cage at home that size, and I haven't had any problems with it. I was looking at the Prevue one on Amazon, and it looks very similar. I just purchased stackable breeding cages online. They're a little smaller that 30 x 18 x 18, but they should work well for just breeding. I've purchased cages from Petco, Doctors Foster and Smith, and Amazon.

I just received my order of 5 Prevue 30 18 18s. Sadly, they do not come up to Petco standards. The paint looks not as thick and it is a slightly different white color. The nice covered seed cups that Petco has with their cage are replaced in the Prevue cage with an uncovered dish.
And the dimensions are off just a smidge (I ordered covered seed cups from Petco a few minutes ago, but thought to try the Petco dish in the Prevue cage and it is enough of a different fit to push a side bar on each side out of alignment).

Enough off so I feel as if these cages are made in different factories to different specs.
I'm not going to send them back, but I'm sad that Petco chose to stop selling their 30 18 18 because in my opinion it is a better cage.

That's too bad that they are not the same as your first one.

When you say put them together, do you mean construct them as individuals, or literally put them together, as in 'attached' to one another? I've actually done that with a few breeding cages that I had. Made two into one (as a double decker in height). Then made three others, into one (as a tripple decker in height). It's amazing what you can do with these things.

I think the next project would be taking some 4 old cages apart, and seeing if I can put 2 together length wise, then two more together , and attach them on top of the first two, to make a wider, taller flight. The possibilities are endless. A good project for a cold winter day :-).

Glad that you managed to construct your shelf =D> . That can't have been easy, seeing as it's quite heavy as you mentioned.
