Not enough medium size cages available

Post by Brette » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:38 pm

I've been looking for a new cage and having some difficulty finding a truly MEDIUM size cage.

I had a huge flight cage for years (4 feet high without stand) that my birds loved but after a few finches passed away, I decided to downsize to a cage 20 inches wide because I couldn't really find a middle ground cage. BIG MISTAKE, at least for the young gouldian who is literally bouncing off the walls in there, poor thing. The 2 other finches, old waxbills seem fine in it, but they are much calmer.

Trying to find a cage on the net that is 30" or 32" long gets you the massive cages similar to the one I used to have, which was just too large for my condo. There doesn't seem to be much of a midddle ground anymore. Retailers trot out an 18" cage and call it medium. I wouldn't put any bird in there.

The only ones on the market that I can find that fit my idea of real medium size cages are the large Vision cages made by Hagen, but they are sort of funky looking and would look silly in my place. I'm just going to keep scouring kijiji and craigslist, but I don't want my little gouldian in the cage I have now for much longer.

What does medium mean to you? Smaller than the 30"x18"x18" that seems to be most common? About that size but just a bit nicer looking?

These are what I would considers smaller cages for finches:
26" long x 14" wide x 20" high

25" long x 12"wide x 17" tall

23" long x 13.5"wide x 23" tall

20 inches is not room for a finch let alone 3 of them. The 30x18x18 are nice cages and not to big to move around. You can easily carry them. They're a nice size for finches. What state do you live in? Do they have bird shows where you live? There are often nice cages there and lower priced than pet stores. You could check the website: YML Group.com or email: vlinenterprises@yahoo.com They have nice cages, and might ship or let you know what retailers they ship to. That is where I got mine.

I've seen seen a few cages online in the 20 something inch range being called "flight cages". Huh? To me those are pretty small.

Thank you guys for the links but I actually got lucky yesterday after I posted this and found a 32" cage on ebay that is still small enough for me to move around easily and fits my condo. I paid quite a lot for it because I ended up in a bidding war, which is funny to me since this cage isn't new and is a Hagen model probably from the 90's. But I think that says a lot about how there is a demand for this size. And the stand was included, which is what I was looking for.

I live in Canada and a lot of online stores won't ship here so I'm happy that the seller is willing to. It will cost me a small fortune but oh well! Love my birds.

Great !
You mentioned that its an older cage, (that is not necessarily a bad thing, as I find that some if these older cages, were a lot sturdier and better made than the newer ones).

I think your Gouldians, will love it.

I know what you mean about some companies not willing to ship to Canada. It took me a while, to figure out the difference between Amazon.com , and Amazon.ca :-D

I agree, cages from the 80's and 90's are still floating around on ebay and kijiji and many of them are in perfect condition with just a few scratches or in need of a cleaning. And frankly, some of these are better looking than the cages I see now. This one isn't collapsible as some of the newer ones are. It's just a solid box. I seriously am wondering how the seller is going to ship this to me.

Brette - I've had that cage in the past and really liked it. It is quite roomy, well designed and well made. If you got it in good condition, it is probably worth the price. I believe that I paid ~$90(US) for the cage alone in the 90's. Congrats on the good online shopping karma!

Cool! You had it! I paid more than 90 for it, but the stand was included. Im pretty excited, the birds are going to be so much more comfortable in it and it isnt as massive as the other one which really got in the way. Im hoping this will be a happy medium, plus its almost an antique lol.

My birds LOVE the old hagen cage I got second hand. (see picture above). I have a female gouldian, and a pair of goldbreast waxbills) I got them all settled in and they immediately took to flying back and forth and bopping around the cage (not out of fright just an energy release) It is really great to see them enjoying their new space. They're peeping in the background as I type this.
