re: the annual shopping trip - I have thought about that a lot. I am only about an hour away from the border and there are places I could get cages sent to. Actually I love the name - "Ship Happens." I am just concerned about Duty on top of exchange and what condition the cages arrive in. This was actually one of the reasons I started this thread. So if anyone has any experiences....

Derk. I love the f030. A very sturdy cage! It does have small doors located on the two larger doors in front. The large doors make access easy when you want to clean or change things. It also has 2 doors on both sides which is handy for bird baths or outside feeders. The bar spacing is 3/8 evenly spaced. There are no gaps in the one I have. The roof is peeked which initially wasn't sure i would like however it really makes it piece of furniture and anyone that has seen it comments "where did I get such a pretty cage". It was on amazon.ca that I ordered it. Why they wont deliver anymore I don't know. As soon ss I click on the item a little notice pops up saying this item does not ship to Maple Ridge BC. I think when the opportunity presents itself I'll order one and pick it up at ship happens.

I just looked at that F040 cage on amazon.com and it's 122.49 US. The border is literally a 20 minute drive for me and I'm over weekly. So even with exchange that's a really good deal for me. On that amount, we would likely not be charged duty for that. But, in your case, the border might be different. We have one of the busiest border crossings in Canada and a couple hundred bucks is (usually) small change and we wouldn't be sent in for that. But, you have to make sure it's an Amazon.com account and not .ca. I have both accounts and comparison shop that way. Some things it isn't a better deal and I just buy in Canada. In some things - like cages - it sure looks like it's worth getting it in the States and risking the duty. Especially with factors like availability and shipping. But, if your border crossing isn't super busy and they're pickier about duty, you'll have to do the math and see whether it's worth it. If my current Java eggs hatch and the babes survive I will for sure be ordering my cage thru Amazon.com and getting it stateside.

So far I have not purchased much in the US unless I was on vacation so price has not been an issue. I have a couple of friends that go down a fair bit and they say usually anything under $200 is ok, but occasionally you get a border guard with a bit of attitude...I was going to look up the US prices, as you have, and compare them with the Canadian price. Isn't it weird how they often don't equate the way you think they would??
I found this duty calculator http://www.ezbordercrossing.com/the-ins ... jmhgLerSmV It says you get three free calculations. I don't know if that is per day per year or per IPS. Regardless, for $130 cage, it says I would pay about $30 between taxes and duty and with exchange the total was just under $200.
I just tried to order the cage from Amazon.ca and get it shipped but as Kyle stated, I was informed it could not ship to the address. When I clicked for further details, it stated they could not ship electronics and the like internationally. No electronics I know of in the cage.
I will try and phone them on another day and find out what the problem is.
