Heat Lamp outside the cage?

Post by Nipper06 » Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:39 am

I have Gouldians and to give them extra heat, I've been using a Ceramic heat "bulb". I put it in an aluminum reflector. But to make it safe for the birds, I put it outside my bird's cage and have it pointing down. To retain some hear I covered a corner of the cage with aluminum foil and made a hole for the where the reflector is. This way, my Gouldians have nice radiant heat from above, in a corner of the cage when they want it - but the actual hot bulb is not in the cage where it might hurt them. So you might consider some means to install the ceramic lamp from outside, pointing in.

Thinus, I use a normal 150W red spotlight in my aviary. I have it in one corner also outside the cage, so the birds can access it as needed.

Its not the same, but is similar. As I said I use it for chickens. But have used it once or twice for finches,Only when I have purchessed a bird in our winter from a warmer climate. After a month of weaning of the lamp its up to nature.
