I use wood shavings (not pine) in a large walk-in aviary. They get all over, though, and the floor in that room gets a lot of shavings blown on it from birds flying around.

If my aviary had solid sides up to about 36", there wouldn't be so much in the room. It takes a lot of cleaning in the room, but shavings do work well in the aviary itself.
