New Aviary

Post by readingfc » Wed Apr 04, 2007 5:52 pm

Hi, sorry I have so many questions but you have all really helped me so far........

We put our aviary up today (6ft x 6ft). My question for today is:-

The aviary is stood on paving slabs (the patio to be precise) and all around the bottom of the aviary is boarded with ply wood so do we put anything in the bottom, i.e. on the slabs or just leave it as plain slabs - I mean will the birds pick out anything that's between the slabs? This is all such a new experience but we are learning every day!

Looks like we are going to have a nice Easter weekend so will get some pics done and posted :)

As always, any advice is welcome

You should get lots of responses - several members have outdoor aviaries (I'm so jealous!). I would say your two main concerns will be keeping critters out (snakes, mice, etc) and keeping it clean.

I don't have much experience in this area, but I would think if the slabs are less than 2cm apart (how do you like that use of metric measurements? :D), and cover the entire floor of the aviary, you should be ok. The main goal is to keep any critters from digging under the edge of the aviary. Also, like Hilary said, it may be hard to keep the pavers clean. It just depends on what they're made out of and how porous they are.

Good luck! And please post pics :)
