Zinc!?

Post by Hoji » Tue May 29, 2007 12:43 pm

Hi,
I'm getting ready to build my new cage (6' long x 30"deep because of the plastic table I'm using and 4' tall, ). I'm confused and concerned about the hardware mesh I bought at Lowe's. It looks like what many of you seem to be using, but it is galvanized which some books say you cannot use. Some folks say you can wash it with vinegar but an online parrot site says that will not actually neutralize it, but another site says only chewing birds like parrots have real issues with zinc anyway.
I'm soooo confused! :?
Have you used galvanized mesh? For how long? No problems?
Thanks,
Hoji
ps. further reading says that hot-dip (that ugly, dull looking stuff) is bad but that plated (the shiny stuff) is ok. Agree?

I have read the same info as you. I wouldn't be concerned with finches being harmed by the galvanized wire. As you pointed out, finches don't use their beaks to climb nor are they as likely to chew the wire.

Personally I would wash the wire with vinegar then spray paint it black with a water based paint.

The vinegar will slightly pit the wire and allow the paint to adhere better. The black paint will make the wire disappear so your birds are more easily seen.
