could I have an outside aivery

Hi I live in the UK and have fallen in love with finches I have 1 female who has 4 eggs and 1 chick. Her mate died about 4 days ago. I have heard that it gets too cold here for me to have an outside aivery is that right. Any advice on starting an aivery much appriciated.......lisa.....

Lisa, we live not far from you in Berkshire and we've got an outside aviary. Because we've put our birds in there from just after Easter weekend we are hoping that by the time winter comes that they will be used to the weather. We've already had some real heavy rain and strong winds and all seemed ok - go for it

yer I will salk with hubby see what he thinks maybe for next year, I am hoping to win a bid on an indoor aviary which can hold 12 finches, so they may be ok for going outside next year,,,,I am sooo excited. The bid closes after lunch time so will let u know if I win it fingers crossed for me

OOH lucky you! I always have to convince my b/f of everything pet wise! You should talk with Kenny he's from the UK and has a beautiful outdoor aviary, actually you should be able to find lots of pics of his aviary on different threads here, use the search button and look up posts from kenny on aviary

What about here in the USA? Does anyone here have an outdoor aviary? I'm afraid it might be off-limits to me - I live in Utah, so we get snow all winter, and 90 degree temps all summer (though spring and autumn are perfect). What do you think? Does anyone have an extreme outdoor aviary like that?

I'm in the same boat as you Steve. Would love to have an outdoor aviary but the weather extremes make it unlikely I ever will. Just keeping the water thawed and ect. would be a major pain.

Once I move into a house with a full basement and I can bring the birds indoors for the winter months, then maybe I'll go ahead and build one. But for now, I'll stick to keeping my birds indoors with me.

I'm thinking of building an outdoor aviary here in north Texas. It would be attached to my bird room, which is an old storage room attached to the back of the house. The down side is it would be on the north side of the house, so with our awful winter winds that blow in from the northwest, it would have to be a warm weather aviary only.

When the snake got in my former bird house, I had to move everything out of that storage room and set it up sort of temporarily as a bird room. It is actually working out fine, so I thought an aviary off of this room would really be nice. I'll let you know how it goes, if I ever get around to building it.

Steve, you could have an outdoor aviary for all but the winter months. As long as the birds have some shade, and maybe a birdbath or misting system, the temperatures in summer shouldn't bother them. We are always in at least the 90s in summer, with a fair number of days over 100, and I think my birds will be OK outside--there is a huge boxelder tree that throws deep shade right where that aviary would go.

hi steve
all you need is some where where the birds can get inside..my old birdroom was heated by a small tubular heater ..very economical! and i just made a hatch where the birds could get inside when it was to cold .its surprising how much cold they can stand as long as they are acclimatised to the weather..birds dont like damp and draughts but they can stand cold.to a certain extent and they are not stupid if you give them a place to get into the warm they will use it
