Lynx and Pixie's first chick in the new aviary hatched this afternoon!
As you can see, Lynx has added some parsley to the millet collection.
Well I must say, having a nest on the floor sure makes picture taking easier!
All of the other zebra hens are playing house and sitting on eggs in various places throughout the enclosure. Its pretty silly! I always have to take the eggs away tho, because they are all siblings. I don't even know if they are fertile, it seems that 2 hens are sharing a nest

Yes, the finch mansion is in the house. At first they were scared when we would walk by, but now they sit there defiantly and glare at us if we get too close. You can get right up next to them (the nest is in a corner) and they won't budge. I hadn't planned on breeding in the aviary, I kept the flights for that. I guess the were bound and determined thoStevePax wrote:That is a great picture of that chick. Nesting on the floor, huh? Your finch mansion is in your house, right? Are they scared off the nest every time you walk by? It seems so interesting to see the birds nesting in such an open place like that.

Hi! Guess what, right on schedule, there are 2 chicks now! Sorry for posting so many pictures, but I have never had the opportunity at such unobstructed views before. 2 down, one egg to go!

And for you Lynx fans out there, here is the little fellow himself. He is bringing to the nest a choice tidbit of pine shaving that he carefully and painstakingly selected from the opposite side of the aviary. (the ones right next to the nest are not good enough
) He then flew aroung for awhile with it in his beak, showing it to everyone and even chasing a few random innocent bystanders while growling with a beak-full. Notice the slightly plucked forehead. This is nothing! Usually when he and Pixie are nesting, he winds up looking like a vulture.
