I find the zebras can be a little aggressive, especially when breeding. Some are more pushy than others. However, they make fantastic first time birds. I have enjoyed having them for the last year.
You could also try our local grass canaries. The males sing so sweetly.
If you get gouldians you will need iodine/liquid kelp drops that you can get at the Nature Store by the food court at Sheraton Mall. (note that these birds are WAY more expensive than the finches and canaries to purchase)
Also think about having a dividing wall, with a door that you can keep open if you want, put into your cage. That way if you have young ones you can close the door and separate the pushy adults from the young ones until they grow up a bit. Also helps if you don't want all to breed at the same time.
Good luck with what ever you choose and keep checking with this forum. I find these folks fantastic with their help and advice!

Hey Neysa where did you get your grass canary from i would love to get a pair.
Also can i see a your avaiary set up. I am so excited check out the work i have done over the pass weekend.

Hi there.
Your cage is way bigger than mine. I'm jealous!

Mine is 9 feet long, 2 feet tall and 3 1/2 feet deep.
I got my birds from the Pet Store in Belleville attached to Just Sports. Call Jefferson at 436-7559. His birds are always healthy and if he doesn't have, he checks around and sources some for you.

Hey Neysa i decided to utilse some of the room at the side of the house hence that size aviary, i've been trying to complete it but the rain is falling almost everyday

. I will most definately pass by the pet store, try to sort out what i will be putting in there. Cant have the avairy complete with no birds available. Your aviary is nice maybe you can add another under that as time goes by. Will keep you posted on my progress.

I just went to his store. He only has budgies and love birds right now. However he can put you in touch with breeders and he will know when he expects more in. He breeds too, so may have at home and just not in the store. Good luck.
