I think I will try Builders Sand in a couple of my cages and see how that works. I already have a seive for the walnut shells but I would have to buy a flour seive. No matter they are fairly cheap..

these moths you are getting,...have they got white heads and quite small if they are they are not from the shells but from the seed if you look in your seed and there is a web like stuff inside the container then your seed is infected and the grubs that make the webs turn in to the small white headed moths

I had the same problem as Marigold with the seed moths. They came in the seed, but LOVED the walnut shell as a place to set up housekeeping.

if a bird does get stuck in the fly trap use cooking oil or baby oil and wash the bird thoroughly afterward

Hi Ken...
They're back. The moths I have are brown blotchy looking. They are the size of a grain of brown rice....
Last week I put the vacation feeders back up. Jim and I ride motorcycles and the Lone Star Rally will be here in Nov. and we stay on the Island for 4 days during the rally. I had to train my Ladies to use them again. The moths love them. I am always checking for eggs and lavas in the seeds...........YUCKY It sure didn't take them pesky little moths long to breed. If only we could get our finches to breed like that......
It took me 5 hours to clean the Bird House today..Man I am sore from head to toes from the bending and stooping.
Scrubed the bottom grate
Pooper Scooped the Walnut shells and added more Sevin Dust
Changed the paper in the Juvenile Fligth cage
Washed nest boxes
Washed treat dishes
Added seeds to the feeders
Made CalciBoost water with DE3
Vaccumed
Mopped
Boxed Gentley Used items to sell at the Bird Fair
I am tired from typing down what I did today............

hi marigold
yep they are the moths from the seed, brown mottly bodies with white heads....they really dont do that much harm to your birds but the larvae that produce the moths can infest your seed really bad if not controlled

Infest your seed, infest your house..... And they SMEAR when you swat them! Yuck.... Just like Marigold I used my hoppers for the long weekend, and the little buggers seem to have doubled in just the couple of days I was gone.

hi hilary
they tend to hide in any cracks and pupate so if you can find any cracks where you think they may be spray them, you can buy an environmentally safe spray to rid your self of them it contains pyrethrum which is made from chrysthanthemums

Hi Ken...I use Liquid Avian Spray with pyrethrum. I put on a mask, spray everything down and leave. The next day I don't see any moths but that doesn't guranatee the spray killed them all.
Yesterday a friend and I visited in my Bird Huuse most of the day we didn't see any moths but I know those liitle buggers are in there hiding...
