I bought three more coconuts at the store today. I'm getting them at walmart and I think part of the problem that I'm having is because they are pre-scored for lazy americans to get them open.

Also, while cleaning today, I found a lone egg from those cutthroats rolling around in that coconut. No attemps at nest or anything. They aren't sitting on it. :|

They will sit on it starting the 3rd egg! Help them with some nesting material in the nest! Maybe you'll have a surprise! I tried the coconut nest too! but i crecked them very well! so i gave up!

Elissa....your coconut nests look great. I just happened to check the price of a coconut at my grocery store and they want almost $3.00 for them and they were teeny tiny ones. I will have to check Walmart next time too and see what the price is there.

When you mentioned it takes time for the coconut to dry out.....about how long does it actually take......weeks...months?

After reading this thread I am becoming interested in making some nests for future use too. :D

No, usually a day or two in the sun and it's easy to remove the contents. I purchased three more coconuts and here they are. You can see the dark membrane remains in one of them but they flake out over night. The coconuts here are "pre-marked" so you have to take care to just open the amount that you want or they'll split in half due to this marking. I use the top part too, for either a perch for the birds or for feeding worms, or to stuff hay in for the birds instead of using that hanging ball thing. :)
