Re: My new Armoire Aviary my husband made.
Thanks for all the great advice. Anyone know where can I find a pair of Owls or Shaftails in Houston? I might not be looking in the right place...

Re: My new Armoire Aviary my husband made. **Update**
So I'm rethinking the water feature.
It's great and it works, but the birds have decided that they want to 'hang out' right over it. So it's like the pooping station. I thought the filter would keep it somewhat clean for at least a week, but that's not the case. I'm going to have to move it to the other side and try something else. Any ideas? TIA

Unfortunately moving is the only thing you can do. Either the fountain or the perches. I always make sure that I have no perches that are above the fountain. But my aviary is bigger so it's easier...Danielle4849 wrote:So I'm rethinking the water feature. It's great and it works, but the birds have decided that they want to 'hang out' right over it. Wow what a great idea! Your husband did a fantastic job
. Hmmm... I have that same exact armoire. If I got rid of all my art supplies.... maybe.... just maybe. But of course my husband is still building the indoor flight for my berries. It has been cold and raining... that's his excuse.
Thanks for sharing!

I can tell the birds just LOVE the space now that they are used to it. They chase each other around and are constantly beeping all day. They enjoy just flying around from the different perches. Sometimes just flying a circle back to the same spot. I'm going to add one more perch higher up so they will have a spot at he top. I'm still in awe at what a great job the hubby did. Everyone who sees it hunks we bought it made.
The water feature will be cleaned out more frequently for now. The other side is one door (the full length top to bottom) so I would risk an escape when cleaning it on that side if I moved it.

Re: My new Armoire Aviary my husband made.
It’s funny you should ask. I was going to post an update this week. I did buy a pair of Shaftail’s two weeks ago. I was worried that they might fight, but they get along GREAT. I’ll take some better pictures tonight. They were sold to me as a proven pair from a local bird store. They had them separate from the other Shaftails (I’m assuming so they didn’t get mixed up and separated). I did notice this week that one of them has what looks like a chipped beak? Not sure if this is a problem or not. I’ll try to get a picture of it to post so you guys can tell me what you think.
My husband took a nest box that I originally bought for the zebras (they didn’t use it) that has the small hole in the front, and he’s cut it to look like the suggested box for the Shaftails with the square opening across. They took to it as soon as we put it in. They sleep in it every night. I have some nesting material that I ordered that should be in tomorrow. I hope they like it. We will see what happens!
I just have to say that I love the aspen shavings compared to anything else. It looks nice, it smells good, and I don’t have to mess with it as much as paper or paper towels. It’s just easier IMO.
I’ve taken out the water feature for now. I’ve seen some large shallow pots at Lowe’s that I think will work better for the space, but I keep forgetting to pick them up when I go. I’ll update on that part when I have it in.

Pretty!! And by chipped what do you mean?? like when the top part of your finger nail peels off, so it is uneven?

No. Chipped like a chip of it is missing. It doesn't look like it bothers him/her though. I'm not sure if it has been there since I came home, or if it's new. I know a pic will help.....
