I worked on it a little a time as I had the time in the evenings. I let it dry for a week and then probably another week until I finished it. It was a very hard shell. I had to make sure I was using nice sharp drill bits and just go slow and steady. I went through several Dremel blades as well cutting the hatch in the top.Lisa wrote: One question though - coconuts are HARD as heck. Even with a drill I'd imagine it was tough to crack. Did it take you long?

That was really clever.
I love the idea of a coconut nest! I might try that next season when I breed my zebras again. Knowing how crafty I am though my husband will probably tell me he'll do it so I don't mess it up.

Re: Coconut nest box
Well, the coconut was a big hit! I have it in their new cage along with their original plastic Abba nest box they were raised in. So they had the choice between either one. Well they took to the coconut right away and slept in it their very first night in the new bigger cage! They are completely ignoring the other nest box!

Thats great! It's very rewarding when they seem to appreciate what you do for them.

Re: Coconut nest box
I've a couple of coconut nests too. I can't say I'm as patient as you and so I bought a few coconuts, tossed the ones that I cracked too much and kept the ones that worked.
My societies and cut throats love them for sleeping but will not clutch in them.
