Thats funny that all you can find was food recipes. It is a small gravel mixed with other materials, it can be compacted to make it hard and absorbs water very well.
If you google some sand and soil places they should stock it, here in Australia anyway. Another product similar is called Lilydale Topping. These are names in Australia, in your country might be called something different.

Ok...I googled Lilydale Topping and did find product info....and no food recipes...lol! I am sure there is stuff like that here...I would have to do more research on that....and maybe employ Hubby's help...he is more dirt savvy than I am!
I am curious to hear how the substrate holds up to the weather over time. I imagine you would have to add more or replace it every so often. Or is this product pretty expensive stuff?

Glad you found some info on it!
I have had it as a base for 6 months now, and is working quite well. I have quails on the bottom of my large aviary whch helps a little with the cleaning. I use a rake to clean and tidy it up once a week. Every so often I am going to have to add to it. But is working quite well.
Someone else I know, uses a kind of sand at the bottom of his aviary, and he thinks that works quite well too.
