The entire tray is covered w newspaper then I put the pellets only under the perches that they poop from. I do this to control the cost. Old newspaper being "free" is still cheaper than bulk pellets. Otherwise you would end up throwing out a lot of good pellets that are not pooped on.

BUT be aware that putting a layer of wood pellets onto the poop tray will make it heavier to carry and move. Not that much, but enough to throw off your balance if you are used to a poop tray with only newspaper.

The pellets do break down, but not into a powder. So it does not fly around when they fly in the cage. Some will just expand, and be a BIG expanded pellet.

I tried sand but lugging it to through the house to the garage and having the bottom break in the bag was a bit of an issue plus it was heavy. Same with cat litter and if wet it dissolved and got muddy. Tried bigger pine chips but it got knocked out and a pain to clean u.

I know a breeder that uses bags of cypress mulch in his keets? nest boxes, claims it keep mold down and dries faster. Wonder if you can use it in the trays? He said you can get it cheap in big bags at Home Improvement stores.

I use newspaper, and have a lot of it because my mother-in-law gives me her old newspapers. However, I have a roll of red construction paper from Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Trimaco-36-i ... VHLJhyccQp), that I've thought about using before. I have been thinking about removing my grates and putting a some sort of sand or something, but haven't decided yet.
