My suggestion...go to the hardware store and get some black plastic 1/4 inch mesh and cut it to fit the flooring. When I raised them we had to cover the top, sides and back with the mesh to prevent the young from going through the bars if we enter into the cage to clean and feed.

For the tray if you don't use the mesh then fill the tray with kiln dried pine.

Ed, your birds are so adorable, your pics made me smile :)

They're almost like little mice, the way they're into everything LOL

Best of luck with them... I have 2 pairs on order that are arriving tomorrow - I'm going to have to take the issues you've had into consideration so I don't end up with the same problem. They are adorable little buggers, aren't they? :)

I think Cindy's suggestion of the 1/4" mesh might help.

OMG... you weren't kidding! So I had 1 little goldbreasted waxbill, who was very well behaved. Yesterday I got 2 more pair of goldbreasted waxbills and they have been escaping left and right. Last night we had one attempted escape but I caught him in the act and put him back in. Today I had no less than FOUR escapes! This is with 1/4 spacing on the bars. Crazy! They go through the bottom grates, through the side bars, I'm sure they could get through the top too. How does anybody keep them in?

LOL!!! maybe they're not used to the cage yet? mine havent attempted yet since i put some paper over some of the grate (where the food is. i think mine were foraging under the grate! its not like i'm starving them or anything.

i also have mine in a mixed flight with OC waxbills and cordon blues.

they're going in and out of a couple of nests on top of each other...

i have fun with watching them, have fun with yours? lol...they are cute little houdinis...

Jennie,
my waxbills are apparently adults. i learned that black on the beak is a sign of maturity and readiness to breed? i could be wrong of course and would love to be corrected and learn the truth.

they are not as nervous as my OCs. i have 4 of them vs just 2 of the OCs and they all, all 6 of them, huddle together. perhaps i should get 2 OCs. but not now. space is getting tight...hopefully, soon.
