I ended up getting this girl. Her breast color was much lighter than the males, so I hope that I called it right! Plus we blew on her butt! ;)

I was wondering when you would post! I talked to the breeder today about my Parrots and He asked me if I was the guy that told you He would swap birds haha. He wasn't upset, just confused I think. Anyways, very nice bird you got there! Glad you were able to trade the male in!

Yeah I mentioned that another forum member had bought some parrot finches from him. He had never heard of this forum, which I was suprised to hear from a breeder!

Ohh nooo! Sorry Jason. A Lilac Breasted male...bummer. I ALMOST mentioned that may be a possibility, but in the picture, I was seeing black on the tip of the beak...which made me think it was a hen coming into breeding condition...obviously Not. Back to the breeder?

Yeah, it was no problem (especially with video evidence). He only had maybe 3 hens out of the 20 or so birds in the flight, none of which I was really crazy about, so he gave me a refund. Now I worry about the lone male in my cage getting picked on by the existing pair. I need to keep an eye on them.

Wow, He most have sold a lot of Gouldians in the last week! When I bought my Parrots, there was at least 50-80 in his garage flight! Glad He gave you a refund, nice guy. He could have very easily refused or just Not responed to Your calls/emails. Again, nice guy, nice birds, but Not the best at sexing them! He blew on my Parrots butts too lol, but with them, there actually Is a difference...like in Canaries. Best of luck finding a new male! I know the Fort Worth mart Is coming up, long drive I know. I've been twice and have always seen Gouldians for sale there. A few people from the forum go and some sell. I met Sally there years ago for some Cordons, wonderful lady and superb birds. What color hen are you looking to pair your male with?

Thanks for the compliment, Chris! The Fort Worth Bird Mart is now just The Bird Mart, and will be held in Cleburne this year on May 17 and Aug. 23. But there is a mart in Temple March 28 I believe, which would be closer to you both.

It looked like there was a lot of blue around the head color like a male would have. Couldn't see the tail wire to be sure. :( Sorry you were not able to get the hen you need.

Black heads can be the hardest to sex IMO. Go for a salmon colored head and it will make things easier. If you're stuck on having a BH, look for ones with less blue around the head and an overall less intense color. Finding a hen in breeding condition will make things more simple as well, due to her having a black beak. Another thing to Do Is look at as many photos of BB's you can until you are familiar with the difference in sexes. Just my 2 cents! I'm sure others will chime in with their tips and tricks :D !

Males tend to have longer tail wires then hens, but not always :)
Like Chris said the blue around the mask of a hen is much more washed out then the bright blue of a male.
good luck
