Re: Cabinet Breeders
lovezebs - I feel you. I just don't have the vision to architect things. But give me a walk-in aviary or a big flight cage and it'll look fabulous when I'm done decorating it.

I know where you're coming from. To me the fun stuff is the decorating. In fact I do tend to redecorate my flight perhaps a little more often than most people consider 'normal' lol. As in, you're doing what? Again?
???
It's just FUN, and I love it when the little guys are surrounding me, Curiousity personified. I swear that if they could, they would be giving me advice.... Ahaah, put that plant over there, no a little more to the left, and maybe a few more flowers, mom. And how do you feel about a little water fountain, mom? Would be so cool for a bath or two, or a hundred.... Oooh, mom, more vines in that corner...
Yea I know I'm nuts, but hey, it's innocent fun and both my birdkids and I enjoy it.

That's beautiful. I was going to say, can you send me one, lol..or two.... but I'll have to satisfy myself by just asking, how did you put it together? Was it really difficult to build?
I so envy you folks who are talented with building stuff like that. I mean I can nail or glue or screw things together, but it usually ends up looking like kaka.![]()
A few bits about the cabinets. Are they hard to build? Yes and no. If I had a shop and the right tools I could put one together in 2-3 hours less paint. BUT I only have hand power tools, no shop and I am a good bit ADD so it all depends on the day and the momentum I have.
One of the biggest problems I had was sourcing the wire cage fronts here in the US. There are about half a dozen different companies in the UK that make amazing cage fronts except none of them will ship over here. So here is my selfish plug:If anyone ever wants cage fronts, please, please, please get them from ABBA seed as it will give them reason to keep them in stock and will allow me to have a source for more!!!
I wold love to be able to make these and sell them but by the time I figure out time and material costs, I would have to sell them for between $200-250 a piece. You can spend the same or less on good Euro style cages from Corners Limited and get a pretty good product.
Mine do not look like kaka but I am certainly still figuring out the details on them. It seems like each one has a bit of a screw up that I wouldn't want to pass on to someone else. It's just like anything else although, the more you make the better you get a it.
I rent right now but if I ever get my own place, I will look forward to building some full sized wall units and the construction of these will surely help in that.

Good point about ordering the cage fronts from Abba. In the US, there is so little interest in cage fronts, unlike in the UK, that there isn't much incentive for suppliers to offer them. If they don't sell, they will be dropped from inventory.

Re: Cabinet Breeders
Hi Lachlan,
I have both aviaries and breeding cages for my birds.
I prefer to use cabinets for some of the species because I only have so much space in the aviaries and I find that some species actually breed better in a cabinet.
I use 30"x18"x18" all wire cages.
One species that in my opinion breeds better in a cabinet than an aviary is the Gouldian.
I breed all of mine this way and simply cut a hole and hang a nestbox on the outside.
A lot of people like to breed Gouldians in colonies but I find that with breeding them that way there always seems to be one or two pairs that take on a subservient role in the flock and won't breed.
I also breed Grassfinches (Shaftails to those in the US) in the cabinets.
I don't put any greenery or fake plants in, just like that with a closed wicket basket in one corner.
I don't like to put this species into aviaries at all because they go around poking their noses, or beaks rather, into other birds nests.
I've had a lot of success breeding them in these cages.
I've also bred stars the same way, although they are more shy and need a bit of foliage, natural or artificial, as Sally has mentioned above for privacy.
Red billed Firefinches, or Ruddies to the Australians should also breed this way.
Apart from these, I would say that Sally has a good list of birds that are suitable.
