Nick:

Visiting your birds would be a good reason.

The temperatures are between 30 and 65 this time of year. We get snow about once a decade.

Because of this, I intend to build an aviary outside perhaps this Summer. This current aviary is part of the learning curve.

kcfd55 - Mike, you did an amazing job! I love your aviary!
In hindsight I wish I had made mine bigger (16ft long x 6 1/2ft high x 5ft deep). Have you figured out which species you want to start out with and who to buy from?

As soon as I see the check for the trip! I'm still paying alimony  .

I am going to buy from AZ Birds. At the moment, I'm going with some gouldians, owls, St. Helen waxbills, strawberry waxbills, a pair of RCCB, and Golden-breasted waxbills. I'd get some button quail, if I could find some.

kcfd55 - Hi Mike, if I were you, I wouldn't put strawberries and gold breasts in the same aviary. They hybridize too easily.
Too bad you don't live closer to San Diego. A friend of mine has too many button quail and wanted me to take some from her...
Iso

PS: If you would like a good singer, why don't you throw in a male grey singer ($35)? Not much to look at I know, but I love their song. Or a little male fife canary for that matter? Size wise he would go really well with the waxbills - and should be available from a breeder in your area.

Uh, oh. I'd better change my order. I do NOT want to hybridize anything. This can happen even if there are lots of mates available for either species? I had thought that hybridization would occur more readily if a species-specific mate were not around, i.e., if a male strawberry and a female gold-breast have no other options.

Well, I don't live THAT far away. How much are they?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Your aviary looks great!!!

Your species choices sound fine to me. I have Strawberries and Goldbreasts housed together, and have never had any hybrid babies .

You mention that your next project is an outdoor aviary, is this one an indoor aviary then?

That's a relief. I thought that I was going to gave to put these birds in separate quarters.

Sort of. It is inside a large atrium (about 2000 sq.ft.) attached to the house. It keeps the temperatures between 55-85 degrees year-round, and humidity at 60-70 percent.

Very nice set up, liked it :)
One question - how do you prevent ants and common house lizards getting in to the aviary?

I am jealous of anyone that can support an aviary outdoors.
I would LOVE to travel to all of your homes. All over the world. Meet all of you, see all of your birds. So the forum is excellent for my imagination to do that!

Here near Omaha NE, US, the summers can be quite hot and the winters quite cold.
