Re: Advice on outside cage
Red bill and senegal fire finches are the same. What Donna has with the grey bills are Jameson's fire finches.

At home, can see the pics now. Wow, they are really wonderful looking finches. I am gearing up to get regular senegal fires. Love the look of those little guys.

Re: Advice on outside cage
I would leave them outside at night and just cover the cage with a blanket that is what I have done in the past and I have never had any problems. My birds are strong from being outside and benefit from the sun and fresh air. However, I do not know what type of critters you have in your area

Re: Advice on outside cage
They have now moved into the aviary. Both are doing great. I had to make some accomodations for the male for a few days and put his food and water on a small table near the bush that he would not come out of.
Yesterday I noticed him all over the floor picking up seeds and eating them. I went into the aviary to see if he would fly off and he did!!! yeah!!! He isn't the greatest flier, but I think with time and exercise out there it won't be long.
He is a keeper!!! As long as he can adjust to the avairy is all I wanted.....

Don't worry about him being on the floor a lot either--Fire finches love to spend time on the ground.

Re: Advice on outside cage
i think its a pair African Firefinches ( Lagonosticta Rubricata ) and not the Jameson's fire finches .... both species are easy to keep but hard to breed ( young ones die because the parents don't like it when we peek and the lack of good insect food .
good luck with the beautiful birds ..

Re: Advice on outside cage
Thank you! He is very shy, but she isn't. I think because of his wing problem and the inability to fly well.....plus being left in a small cage he becamse extremely timid.
He is doing great and I am not worried about breeding him. Fine if they do.... and fine if they don't....
I just thought they would be a beautiful addition to my aviary.

Re: Advice on outside cage
He is flying all over the aviary now. I have moved the extra table and he is now getting water from the fountain and food like all the others. His wing is no longer droopy and he is singing up a storm. Mission accomplished!!
