Re: Flight Rooms?
You just have to get to know Paul (poohbear). We all love his humor and take it like he dishes it out..... if your on this forum you will learn to also.....
I personally would not want carpet or plastic. (JMHO)
I have a tile floor and am building an addition. It will have a cement floor with a drain and we are going to put apoxy (is that what it is called) paint on it. I used to put down newspaper, but now I use large white towels. I put them down, turn them over to the other side, wash them after that and put down new ones. I like this much better than the newspaper. I only put the towels under the poop areas. (perches, etc....)
This way my floor stays fairly clean. I like the idea of bedding, but my area is too large to have to deal with cleaning it and changing it out. Besides I am a little nervous of them foraging around where they have pooped.
I think each person has to do what works for them. I always listen to all the ideas and then do what I want to do.

Re: Flight Rooms?
I'm sorry I was so offended Paul. I was just really excited and thought you thought I was a crazy lady. I guess people from different parts of the world really do have different customs and you guys are just blatantly honest! Some people (like me) aren't used to that. Plus, words on a screen are always taken wrong, we can't see through the computer screen. I apologize. Truce?
Thanks for all the GREAT pictures, I'm starting to get some ideas. One other thing I'm trying to figure out is bedding/litter. My big fear is walking in there and stepping on a baby bird. They are bound to be tossed, accidentally be be pushed and they will fledge. I wouldn't be able to see them buried in the bedding. I know, it sounds like a really stupid fear but I'd be scared with every step. I guess I'd just have to be careful. Thanks again guys and I wish I could respond to everybody! I'll keep you guys updated!

Re: Flight Rooms?
I mainly use the bedding because I have button quails in the aviary. (And I love them, they are the cutest things, wouldn't want to miss them for anything!
)
It does have disadvantages though and I probably would have done a solution like Donna's with tile if I had only flying birds. The bedding does need to be changed, and I have to admit it is also a heaven for bugs. The birds toss mealworms, and the mealworms hide in the bedding.... well... now I have mealworm beetles in it.
I also had an ant problem in summer and I do have occasional roaches. (But I assume I would have them anyway, they are just attracted to the food and since I don't want to spray any poison I have to deal with them using traps.) I have already a major cleaning weekend planned where I will change ALL the bedding and wash the plastic before I put new bedding in. (I never had to do that though in 2.5 years I have the room. Before I always just changed the bedding partially.)
Donna, how's your new room coming along???

Re: Flight Rooms?
For those bird lovers who built flight avaries in the bedrooms, how do you clean the bottom? I wanted to build an indoor flight avary, but dont know what to put on the bottom floor. The avary will be 6 feet wide by 6 feet long. Can I put a heavy bag on the floor? What other materials can I put on top of the bag? How often do you can the floor?
Thanks,
Anthony

Re: Flight Rooms?
Anthony,
I covered the floor with pond liner (a heavy plastic sheet), and stapled it about a foot high to the walls. I made a foot high threshold for the door so the pond liner goes up there as well. I use aspen shavings as floor bedding.
You can see pictures of my aviary building progress here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/udmoran/MyAviary#
The second picture shows the pond liner.
I clean out some of the shavings in dirty spots every few weeks and put new shavings in. About twice a year I replace a bigger amount. After almost 2 years I recently took every little bit of it out and replaced it. The reason was that escaped mealworms had happily morphed into beetles in the shavings and lived and thrived there...
That's the reason why I feed only frozen mealworms now. I hope I can avoid this problem in future.

Re: Flight Rooms?
I love your aviary and the mixed species. I see you use the flagpole idea to hold the branches. I think these work great. Looking forward to the grapevines

Re: Flight Rooms?
Thanks, Candace!
Yes, the flagpoles work just great!
I think the grapevines and putting in new branches will have to wait til the following weekend after all. It's supposed to rain here this weekend, my fishtanks are overdo on cleaning, and we have a few errands to run, so we postponed working on the aviary. But I will try to get new pictures after I have everything set up afterwards. I have the new 3-tiered fountain, and I also bought 2 new big palms at Walmart the other day ($10 for 6 foot palms!) and will put those in. Then I just need a few sunny days to get brandnew pictures...

Re: Flight Rooms?
this just aint fair, how come Paul makes some tame even laid back comments and gets called rude, I been trying to have someone accuse me of rudeness for months without any success
miserable damn pom steals all my ideas
if your going to make your flight room, you will probably need a safety door on it, be a right * trying to catch finches all over the house

Re: Flight Rooms?
I have a sheer curtain in front of the door. I close it before I open the door so there's the curtain behind me when I enter the aviary. And I keep the door closed of course as soon as I'm in. I never had a bird escape into the house...

Flight Rooms?
Hi There!
I am new to this forum and am enjoying so many topics on here. I love the fact of turning a bedroom into an avairy. I myself was able to turn a bedroom into a bird room when my daughter left for college. Unfortunately my house is fairly new so I don't think my husband would like me to set my birds free but I would do it in a heart beat
