Re: Building my new 360 square foot aviary
The green carpet is a commercial quality astro-turf. The stuff I used was actually taken from a nearby outdoor Hockey Field. When they re surfaced the field they gave away all the old stuff, most of which was still in excellent condition. Don't buy the cheap astro-turf/artificial grass as it isn't dense enough and is just rubbish.DanteD716 wrote:I love the vidoes, birds and aviary!! Re: Building my new 360 square foot aviary
I have babies already! Just went out to check on my Javas which laid some eggs a few weeks back. They had not been sitting on the eggs much so I didn't think anything would come of them. But this morning I had a peek and saw several squirming bodies. I am however a bit concerned as it is almost the middle of winter here (New Zealand) and in the coming days we are likely to get our first frost.
I am also wondering if I should add extra feed for the parents to give to the babies (meal worms, other insects perhaps?). Currently the parents are fed on a seed mix and whatever else they get from the ground and plants in the aviary.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael.

Re: Building my new 360 square foot aviary
Michael, all parent birds will look for softer foods (like hard-boiled egg) to feed their chicks -- I would definitely try to give them some -- but if you are feeding with the other birds in the same enclosure you may have to provide a lot because the other birds will eat it too!
Wonderful enclosure!

Michael,
What an AWESOME aviary! I only wish I could have something like that here in Canada. I'm afraid we're too far north and get some horrendous winter weather. Maybe someday I'll add something on to the side of my dreamhouse, that comes inside for the birds in the winter!
Beautiful birds.
Cheers,
