Re: mixed small aviary?
You mentioned, you put nests in the aviary.
I would remove them.
A nest might trigger a breeding mood in the birds, and that "might" get aggressive because they can't find any hens to mate with.
Do you have an incandescent lamp on the fluffed up BCCB? That might help him recover sooner, as it can put energy into recovering rather than keeping warm.

Re: mixed small aviary?
I agree on the canaries, Colorin. I kept one of mine with my finches for a while but it was like letting loose a hyperactive 5 year old into an English Gentleman's Club.
He liked to pull the 'undies' of the finches when they were sleeping and he just wouldn't quit with his shenanigans.

Re: mixed small aviary?
thanks, Ac12, I'll remove them (I placed them because I was told that owls liked to roost inside a nest -like societies) but they have ignored the nests completely. so I'll follow your advice
I don't have a lamp, but I've hung the cage on the wall over the heater. the room is kept at about 20ºC. He seems to be doing fine. Much better than I expected! (his little cage is covered all sides except the front)
annague.. I have 1 metre long cages where I keep the canaries. Right now, one of the canaries (my timbrado) shares his cage with a goldfinch x canary hybrid with a "divider" in the middle, and everytime I've removed the divider, the canary gets mad. He open wis wings and beak and chases the hybrid!

hi
i bought my first pair of canaries in 1973 ....a pair of borders, when they first got together, the male actually drew blood by pulling a primary feather out of the females wing, but when it came to breeding season you could not ask for a nicer pair.sharing the feeding of the chicks snd evrything.sometimes they are predictable and sometimes they are not,but i am afraid when you keep birds you have to get used to them having a fight now and then

Re: mixed small aviary?
update on my mixed aviary. My bluecap looks gorgeous and is a truly beautiful bird that gets on very well with my two gouldian cocks

Owls are funny to watch and are full of energy. They chat and fly around all day long

My two gouldian cocks (taken away from gouldians-aviary after breeding season) LOVE window-watching. They seem to be very interested in the world outside. Be it a sparrow or a blackbird or nothing at all. Maybe they just like the scenery

and my diamond firetail, that I placed in the aviary too, after the death of its husband/wife, it's turned out to be a very friendly bird, not bossy at all. I think he/she's enjoying having company. (can anyone tell me whether it's a HE or a SHE??)

They all absolutely LOVE bathing!!! Bath time it's fiesta time for them!

Re: mixed small aviary?
hi
when i first started with my finches in the 70s i had a much smaller set up then my bird room was only 6ftx6ft but it was attached to the aviary so they could fly straight out of the birdroom and get into the aviary via a small pop hole...with my room being smaller i had heating in those days...a 4ft tubular heater, what i am coming round to is i had firetails then and cherrys ,stars and a few other exotic one pintails and red bishops it was fantastic with all that colour, strange thing is i never got round to gouldians because there werent that many in the uk then due to import restrictions...then when i built my bigger place it was to expensive to heat so i had to abandon all those lovely birds...because our winters where far to severe my birdroom was well insulated and kept at a reasonable 50 degrees,i had the room then and the aviary space but i regret that i never ever got my gouldians....as you may notice i dont comment on them because i didnt keep them,my father in law did because he had heating facilities .its something i always regret but seeing those firetails took me back to when i first started......it is really strange though my father in law could breed those magnificant birds ...but he ended up selling me his javas because he had them for 3 years but never ever bred any....strange how these things work out!

Hi Kenny,
well, I've never bred anything but gouldians. I don't need much heating as here, in the south of Spain, we have a mild climate. Maybe one of these days you can start breeding them! maybe just a pair or two in an indoor aviary

Re: mixed small aviary?
Colorin, your birds are absolutely beautiful!! It sounds like you are enjoying your mixed aviary?!
Kenny, I'm still relatively new with birds -- how do they effect your immunity? (Something about their droppings?!) Can you explain a little bit more to me?

Re: mixed small aviary?
hi
about my immunity to the birds,i really wish i knew myself what exactly it was,but when i first came out of the hospital after my chemo they said i wasnt even allowed to let my dogs lick me.....they gave me a massive list on what i could eat and not eat.like takeaway meals, pepper (out of the mill kind) not bell peppers or any others i was not allowed to go out for a meal because there may have been bacteria in the kitchens i am still not allowed to eat the skin of apples ,pears lettuce is forbidden in case of any wildlife left on it.after i came out of the hospital it meant that all the main chemo and radio therapy was finished, but then i had to go on maintainance therapy for a year which is chemo in tablet form 21 a day
then i had to go to see another specialist who told me in no uncertain terms that iwas to old for a transplant because the leukemia strain i had, only children normally get...and she explained about the immunity that a normal persons blood count has a reading of 30 for immunity and mine was 0.2 so i guess thats the reason for it!if i go to the dentist i have to have platelets given and blood if i am having major work done because my blood doesn`t clot normally if i find out when i go to the hospital on the 11 th of this month i will let you know.....sorry for the drawn out explanation

Re: mixed small aviary?
Sorry, too, to hijack your thread, Colorin. I'm glad you know the firetail is a hen -- maybe that's why not so much aggressiveness?!
She is very beautiful!
Kenny, I'm sorry --
What they have you doing is so restrictive, isn't it? I'm getting older myself and boy is it not fun.
I am very glad that you are on this forum and sharing your knowledge with the rest of us! I am looking to buy some Staffords, soon andd will probably be asking you some questions about them once I get them.
