Hey.

After a very long day of building and creating, we finally got the aviary finished. It was so much fun to setup and work out which way was best. This is our first attempt so I hope we have done it right.

Here it is without the birds. The weather is too hot for the next week at this stage unfortunately. Once they go in it will be so exciting =D>

Ginene Thanks =D>

Two weeks later and I am still waiting to put my little lovelies outside....another week of high 30's ahead

Every day I think I am a day closer and then the heat wave continues. All I can do is put them out in their cages for a few hours each morning, I have also started to leave the bird room window open to let them acclimatise to the night time weather, but geeze I don't know how they are going to go in the day time, even when the temperature drops it is still going to be hot here.

All good things come to those who wait right?? ppffff =D>

Rox Your timing is perfect !!!

I was able to shift them in 3 days ago. We are finally having 25 - 35 days. First day I put them in, we had bush fires around us, so the smoke was a real problem and I was worrying my butt off but all was well. Then that night the temp dropped to 10 degrees - from one extreme to the other !!

Because of the 40 degrees heat, we had to build a false roof that sits on top of the aviary, as the tin was super hot to touch, so we made a frame up with shade cloth and then some bamboo blinds on top of that and it has done the trick, no more hot heated roof.

Here are some pics, not very good ones just yet as they are all sitting at the back for now getting used to it all. They do like hanging around the ladder that hubby made me though, just a bit clever he is =D>

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks fantastic!!!!!! =D>

I'm so glad you finally got the birds in, they (and you) must be loving it!

Good idea with the shade cloth and bamboo blinds. I think I will have to do something similar next year, especially since the temps are rising...

I love the holder you made for nesting material, I might just steal that idea :D

Rox thanks =D>

It was so exciting putting them outside. They love it, so do we !! I love waking up and sitting outside with them and my coffee. It's so nice to see all of their beautiful colors flying around, chirping away.

The false roof has worked a treat, it was very very hot in there before, but now the roof isn't even hot to touch. All it is, is a square frame that sits above the roof covered in shade cloth, then the three bamboo blinds on top. =D>

The straw holder was my genius idea!! It's great because they all land on it and tug it out. Very simple plastic garden edging rolled up and stuffed with the straw =D>

More pics to come as they settle down a bit. =D>

Colt Thanks :D

My invention surely has a lot of interest. To think I just cut a piece from the garden edging and rolled it up and stuffed the straw in would be such a hit. I didn't want to use wire so the plastic was perfect. All I did was join it with some cable ties.

Have fun making one, it will take you 5 minutes =D>

I am pretty much in love with my pied Cordons as well, just have to pray that they have babies for me. I also got another pair of pied African Fires last week as well, I love anything pied, another reason I have 5 pied Zebras now. Anything pied and I will be on to it like a flash =D>
