prior the re re-work i had lost quite a few finches due to rats. the walls ceiling and roof are well insulated and a perfect habitat for breeding mice and rats. only entry point could be via the ripple iron on the roof so what can you do.

i bought a few packs of steel wool in a coarse grade

Image

then plugged it deep into the ripple iron

Image

with the aid of a jigsaw i cut out the pattern

Image

nail it into position -yes its straight -camera illusion. i then sealed it with gap filler. that way i can walk to rear of aviary- check out the seal and if touched i know i have a potential problem

Very clever idea for keeping the rats and mice out of the roof!!

Often everyone thinks of the ground level protection only but they will find anyway in if they get the chance. Nasty critters!!! (we had a problem years ago with my dad's aviary - huge pain in the bum and they also took out loads of chicks)

at the moment it's mid winter and just too cold to work. with below zero's overnight and cold windy wet days. will take this up a bit later.
now if you check out the breeding section you will see some nice diamond firetails

The aviary redevelopments is looking great! Well done.

I'm interested to know if you get strong winds out your way? Like your cover for the open mesh sections. Is it just velcro'd into place with pulleys to roll it up with?

yeah -that's it. strong winds are not really a problem here. when it is about i usually sit a couple of bricks across the bottom to help weigh it down
