Re: Do you have an aviary?
Do you have any kind of heater in here? I use an oil filled electric radiator. Some use light bulbs. I do find that it is not the temperature that causes problems it is the drafts. I too cover mine in plastic. I find when it is colder the birds will eat a lot more...need those calories to burn to keep warm.
Today it is 65% in NW Florida. The inside of the covered aviaries/greenhose rises to between 80% and 90% on sunny days. I open the door to the bird house and let the heat warm that area...saves on the heating bills

Re: Do you have an aviary?
I hope you are talking about -9 degrees centigrade, not fahrenheit...
Even so, I think it would make me nervous to have it so cold. But I guess zebrafinches are not as sensitive to cold as waxbills are. I am worried when it gets below 65 fahrenheit in my aviary, but of course they are spoiled "indoor birds"...
Your aviary looks great! And I also like the night lights especially. I hope you will post more pictures of the interior!

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Thanks for the comments. I was really nervous when the temperature dropped but worked from sunrise to sunset at the weekend making the blinds and putting emergency heating in. The blinds are easily taken on and off as tey just slot onto bolts through holes drilled in the timber batons.
I use an 800W oil filled radiator which keeps the chill off the air and there are seven nest boxes in the inside flight so enough shelter for all of the finches if need be.
I am seriously no sort of expert and just finding my way carefully with the finches!!

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Marvin that looks a pretty cool setup, i was close to building aviary this year but waiting until turn of the year (the midlands as cold as the north
) ... Did you build your aviary yourself or convert a shed etc ? Really appreciate as im unsure what kind to build at minute, im looking at a basic rectangle shape, 6ft x 6ft indoor and 7ft by 6 ft outdoor flight, but this is as certain as i am at the minute,
Nevertheless that looks an awesome place for your birds
...
p.s. Fancy putting a little post in introductions

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Thank you Cando and Gav, most kind.
The aviary came from here http://www.kingdomforestproducts.co.uk/Aviaries.htm and I cannot speak highly enough of these guys.
I priced it up and I couldn't build it for the price they charged, I don't know how they did it. The joinery is absolutely astounding in terms of quality. I've tweaked it a bit by adding gutters and rain deflectors, lights on a little low voltage circuit with a dusk/dawn sensor and also snow blinds and simple heating, but honestly, they are worth a look. They're lovely people too and were really helpful with the progress every time I called them.
This one is 10ftx4ft: 4x4 for the covered part, with a 2x4 inside flight and a safety porch which I use to keep the heater in too, and the outside flight is 6x4. The outside flight has two concrete sides with a 18inch x 5ft strip of soil in the middle which grows shrubs. Across the end is a drain with a standard bath-type plughole concreted into it to drain water when the concrete is cleaned down.
I'll see if I can find the intro's bit
