Re: Do you have an aviary?
I was thinking of turning a bedroom into an aviary. It has one window, so I'd put some plants (ferns? begonias? any ideas?) for shade and perches. It would also be my writing space, so I'd have cabinets/covers to protect my stuff. The door opens to an interior hallway, so it's not the end of the world if someone escapes, and I'm thinking to deliberately keep the area by the door perchless and barren so the birds aren't lured in that direction. Ideas? Thoughts? Cautions?

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Here is an old thread that a former member posted about turning a bedroom into a free-flight bird room. You might get some ideas from this:

And if you decide to do this, you could start it as a new separate topic. I'm sure lots of members would be interesting in hearing about your progress and seeing photos.

Is the aviary of the month feature coming back? It seems to be out of commission for the moment. Can't remember how long it's been that way. It's a really neat part of the site.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
The aviary is finished. Just need to add a few trim pieces and finish adding perches, plants, etc....
For about $120 (and about 6 hours of work) I built an aviary that is 3-4 times the size of the cage that cost $499 at the store.
My finches don't know what to do with all the space.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
I'm trying to make a flight cage out of an old cabinet my dad got from someone, my mother does not like this idea. I already took it apart and I don't feel like putting it back together... Runs to corner before mother tells me to put it back together Also my birds are doing well now, this is wonderful.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
I have had plans floating in my head for an aviary with a pvc frame for quite some time but I always feared the conures would be too hard on such a lightly constructed enclosure. I think finches on the other hand will do jus fine. I will post it if I ever do get around to building it.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
I'd just like to say, 95% of bird breeders in Australia have aviaries, often large 8x6m mixed aviaries or massive flight complexes with walkways and a bird room. I know of almost no breeders who use small cages as aviaries are just the way to go for us. Aviary sizes for us is around from 2.5x1.5m to over 8x6m aviaries, just depends on the experience and the amount of land available. The average backyard aviary is usually from 3x1.5m to 5x2.5m. I guess Aussies have kind of "mastered" the finch aviary but as more and more apartments go up and backyards get smaller, many are resorting to cabinets, mostly beginners. For us, "aviaries" are essentially defined as large structures with a flight and a shelter where birds can live and breed. The tall, wooden "aviaries" on wheels that are commercially available today are classified here as "cages". If you have any questions about aviary setup just PM me.
Thanks
Aidan
