"Out of the weather box" instead of "Nesting Box"?

Post by sierranomad » Sat Oct 02, 2010 11:31 am

Questions, questions, questions.

I don't want the birds to view the box I am making as a nesting box.

I am going to provide nesting boxes for when I want to encourage them to breed (the Societies anyway, to build up the flock). But I don't want them to view the "out of the weather" box as an encouragement to breed.

Is there a way to discourage them from viewing it as a nesting box? Make it larger? Put the entrance right on the floor so that eggs/chicks could fall out? Do these ideas make sense, and are there any other suggestions?

I know, questions, questions, questions. :)

Thank you,

Jon

Mmm me thinks any box will be viewed as a nesting opportunity. These are finches we are talking about right? :D

The only non nest-type out-of-the-weather I have seen that could probably work without stimulating them to breed it the Gouldian privacy perches. Perhaps you could do something like that but make a few wider to accomodate a pair or more and possibly make them deeper out of wind? Most of my finches don't get out of the weather into a nest. They perch someplace a bit sheltered.

What do you want them to do with it ?
You need a part of the aviary thats out of the wind and rain with perches

Thanks Monique and Bill!

There's still a lot I don't know about birds. I thought I had to provide a box out of the wind/rain. So I just need to put some perches in a protected area! That's great.

I'll put boxes in later, when I want them to breed.

Thanks again!

Yes thats the plan we put perches so they can get out of rain and wind away from the cold ,and then you look in the aviary and there sets a bird in the rain #-o

Bill I feel your pain! My finches not only perch outside in the cold, but also take the opportunity to take a cold shower and drench themselves by rubbing/bathing in the wet foliage. I think they do this just to age me faster.
