Aviaries - update 01.2011

Well one always needs new cages and I got the ok from Hubby that I could invest in another for miscellaneous uses like quarantine / single species breeding / resting hens etc. So I found a serious bargain on our local ads (like your Kijjii spelling?) and could not pass it up.

This is a kit form and ready to assemble aviary from Treco (Aust. co.) 2.3 long x 1.1 wide x 1.8 high (meters)
Fully covered and sheltered. Really glad I could get it. Taking it down was easy, but putting it back up was a bit of a challenge though thankfully the guy that previously owned it was really good and kept the manual. Being a metal sheet it gets rather hot in there, but I have placed it under a tree with shrubbery to shade the wall panels. If it is still too warm I will shade the sides or cover them with bamboo etc to reduce heat.

THis is my current mixed aviary. I still need to paint the wire this summer, but I keep having birds breeding etc that I cannot / don't want to disturb them to paint. I have to lock them all in the shed for a few hours to do so and its jolly hot here at the moment. I am cherry red from building the other little aviary yesterday as it is.

Very nice! Looks like a great find! I like that the front is covered a bit for privacy, possibly a great spot for some breeding pairs to set up their nest!!!

And of course, as always pictures please once you have it set up with birds!!!!

Great find for sure! I thought so. Even my husband took one look and gave me the thumbs up.

Cindy agree. I placed this little aviary far away from everything so privacy, peace and quiet will be achieved in there and possibly some breeding when I decide what to put in there.
Of course as soon as it is put into use I will post pictures. I still have some fiddling to do and have to make a safety door.

Was wondering about that...

Lovely :D And I love a bargain =D>
Wish I could use something like that here but I know the local racoons would be in there in a heartbeat [-X

Wow How would a racoon get in there? So glad I don't have that problem!

Not to worry Misty. As soon as I have it up and running pics will be posted.

I had racoons at my shop push in the lower side and buckled the metal. It thought it found a nice little home. I did not have birds in my tin building, I had supplies... Metal cans of dog kibble...which it also got into. #-o I ended up setting live traps and relocating over 20 coons to the country 8) I found that racoons can get into about anything :? I battle them now at my fish ponds.... they do love to catch goldfish #-o I had fresh track on my beach this morning :|

Candace I found that the coons were inspecting my outdoor aviary this summer. I have a night vision game camera set up on the aviary so I got their picture. I installed an electric fence around the base of the aviary and have only seen them back once since then, maybe they got a zap while they were here.
So far so good but I'm always looking out for them.

I can't say I've ever seen any coons near mine. In GA or FL - thank God not Florida because if they got into your metal building they would have easily gotten into my flight I had in Florida. Actually it was a gorgeous red wood bird "house" that Neil built that I wish I still had now - but we gave it away since it was so big and heavy. I can't imagine the mess they would make or eat!

Thanks Debbie...My aviaries are on a concrete slab (enclosed carport) with thick hardware wire on a 2 x 4 frame. The coons can't get in it but they have torn the outer screen, along with some squirrels. :? I someday want to build a freestanding outdoor aviary and will probably use that electric wire idea. Thanks :D

I've been on vacation and spent a good few hours trying to sort out the aviary and make it ready for the chosen inhabitants... my Violet Ears.
So...
The final product (minus the safety area as that factory for the materials only opens next week).

SO of course now that I've put in the effort and kitted the aviary out for them, they are nesting already in the main aviary because I took too long! LOL
