New Finch Parents and our Flight Cage.

Post by Reghan » Wed Jan 26, 2011 3:30 pm

:D
hey everybody I just want to thank you for putting together such an awesome board! my girlfriend and I are picking up our first pair of zebras this weekend. We are really excited about being finch owners. I have read literally every article in the FIC and finally feel prepared to take care of these finches. I have been on here looking at everyone's cages and getting ideas, and for the the past week I've been building a nice little flight cage for my girlfriends apartment. it is 30"wide x 28" tall x 18" deep. we used the black plastic mesh on it. that stuff is really cheap, light, and easy to work with. we're really excited about the cage I made so I figured we'd share it with you all.

after we get the cage all set up with perches and the new zebbies in and all settled one of us will get on here and post some pictures of them at their new home.
almost forgot, this username is for the 2 of us haha.

My girlfriend really had her mind set on two females before we got to the pet store. but after walking in and seeing this couple in the cage together we couldn't bear to split them up. We had a long talk with the bird caretaker at the petstore and I was really impressed with her knowledge of finches. she seemed sad to see the couple go. This is Mr. Cheeps and Lady Tailfeather haha. They seem to LOVE their new house. it is MUCH larger than their cage at the pet store. This is just a quick phone picture. We took more with the digital but I forgot to load them up before I left her apartment for the week. They are extremely active and love flying back and forth between the perches. everynight the two of them have been huddled together in the nest sleeping. The cage is in her bedroom so its nice to wake up on a lazy sunday morning and just lay there and watch the two of them. which we did for quite awhile haha. On a side note, I had no idea two birds so small could poo so much. I now see why it is necesarry to clean cages every day!
I can see this finch hobby becoming very very addicting. I'm already formulating plans to convert an old dresser into a flight cage for my apartment haha.

Awesome cage and kudos on researching. I have a cage of similar dimensions with zebra finches too.

I've found that zebra finches are very active and make quite a mess for little birds! The Gouldian finch I had hardly made any mess. The zebras can be so active flying around and usually taking half the seed dish with them when they fly off. :-)

I have a couple of those rope coils which hang in my cage and they love the multi-layer perch effect. I put them in and out just to change the cage up sometimes for the birds benefit.

poop-off seems to be the best stuff.

CANNOT FIND A CAGE [-o< . we purchased 2 zebra finches a few months ago and now have 5. All my research says we should have at least a 40 inch long cage for 5 finches. I am not able to find any that size. They are in a large Cocktail cage now and seem happy but I want the best for them. my husband cannot build a cage because he cannot hammer a nail in a wall. lol The ONLY cages I can find long are 30 inches. can anyone suggest where I can get a cage? thank you

maryt can you put a picture up of the cage they are in now if the bars aren’t too wide then they should be fine in a cockatiel cage
