Finches in general prefer a wider cage over a taller one. But if you have everything else right and they are in breeding condition, then they will breed.

Keep in mind Gouldians are not easy to breed. They are notorious for chick tossing, and abandoning the nest. You will be lucky, as a new bird keeper, to successfully breed Goulds the first time out.

I am new to birdkeeping and successfully bred Goulds for the first time in a small cage (about 20x14-higher than longer). So it's not unheard of, but Tammie is stating the odds. I even provided just a regular basket nest. At the time, I didn't even know what to provide for nesting material so I gave them this and that, eventually discovering grasses at the pet store. I moved the nest out of the cage to look at the eggs, etc.--all the stuff I wouldn't do again  But, despite all, ignorance was bliss.

Yes, you evidently lucked out with a tolerant and very willing pair of Gouldians.
